ABSTRACT
BASIC GRAMMAR AND READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS AMONG
GRADE 9 STUDENTS
This study investigates the relationship between grammatical skills and
reading comprehension among Grade 9 students of Bantayan Southern Institute.
The research aims to determine whether proficiency in grammar correlates with
improved reading comprehension abilities. A quantitative research design was
employed, involving a survey of 50 Grade 9 students. Data was collected through
standardized tests measuring grammatical skills and reading comprehension
performance. Pearson's r was utilized to analyze the correlation between the two
variables. The findings indicate a moderate positive correlation between
grammatical skills and reading comprehension, suggesting that students with
stronger grammatical understanding tend to perform better in reading
comprehension tasks. These results highlight the importance of integrating
grammar instruction in language curricula to enhance students' overall reading
proficiency. Recommendations for educators include focusing on grammar as a
foundational component of reading education to foster improved comprehension
skills.
