GENDER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LABOUR MARKET
Gender equality means that men and women should have equal rights, treatment,
responsibilities and opportunities in social and economic life. However, there are many
sectors in which women do not have the same employment opportunities. In my
opinion, the labour market still shows inequality and there are stereotypes about the
type of work a woman can do.
In the first place, there is segregation in some types of jobs considered only for men. In
particular, female participation in political life is lower than men although women
demonstrate similar political leadership. In fact, in some countries women do not have
any participation in politics. Another example is the case of women in management
roles in almost all economic sectors. In this case, there is a low percentage of women in
important positions despite having an equal or better professional preparation.
Another point to consider is that the gender pay gap is highest for women. In this
regard, jobs in the public sector show equal conditions for men and women, but in some
private jobs this is often not true. Women are substantially lower paid than men because
they perform more hours of unpaid work as childcare or housework and they have work-
life conflicts. In addition, women tend to work in low-wage sectors such as care of
people, education, cleaning and others.
In conclusion, in spite of considerable advances in gender equality, there are still some
disadvantages for professional women. I firmly believe that this inequality can change
with the education of boys and girls and fight for our rights.
