4 Sketching Graphs of Functions MHF 4U1
Learning Objectives
• To be able to identify and apply transformations action upon a function
• To be able to sketch transformed functions
Transformations
The main types of transformations that we will be dealing with in this course are stretches,
compression, reflections and translation. Transformations must be performed in a particular order.
Stretches, compressions and reflections must be performed before translations.
We will consider the transformations acted on a function
𝒚 = ±𝒂𝒇(±𝒌(𝒙 − 𝒅)) + 𝒄
Once again, stretches, compressions and reflections must be applied before translations
𝒙
(x,y) → ( + 𝒅, 𝒂𝒚 + 𝒄)
𝒌
New Terminology
Turning Point - A point on a curve where the function changes direction.
Review from Grade 11
Vertical Stretch/Compression |𝑎| > 1 Graph stretched vertically by a factor of a
0 < |𝑎| < 1 Graph compressed vertically by a factor of a
𝑎<0 Graph reflected in the x – axis
Horizontal Stretch/Compression |𝑘| > 1 1
Graph compressed horiz. by a factor of
𝑘
0 < |𝑘| < 1 1
Graph stretched horiz. by a factor of 𝑘
𝑘<0 Graph is reflected in the y-axis
Horizontal Translation 𝑑>0 Graph is translated to the right
𝑑<0 Graph is translated to the left
Vertical Translation 𝑐>0 Graph is translated up
𝑐<0 Graph is translated down
Ex. #1 – Find the co-ordinate of the point (2,3) after each transformation
a) y = f(x + 1)
b) y = 3f(x) + 2
c) y = -2f(3(x – 1)) + 1
Ex. # 2 Describe the order in which you would apply the transformations defined by 𝒚 =
– 𝟐𝒇(𝟑(𝒙 – 𝟏)) – 𝟒 to 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥. Then state the impact of the transformation on the domain, range,
intervals of increase/decrease, and end behaviours of the transformed function.
