Prior Learning: It will be helpful if children have practised Adding Money.
Learning Sequence
Remember It: Work through the slides on the Lesson Presentation and practise finding number facts of 100.
Demonstrate how the hundred square can be used to count on and find the missing answers.
Strategies: The Lesson Presentation recaps subtraction strategies that were explored during the addition and
subtraction block of lessons. They are encouraged to use their understanding of £1 = 100p and number facts
to 100 to help subtract from £1. Children are reminded how to subtract two-digit numbers and tens and a two-
digit number from a two-digit number.
Problems: The children can now apply these revised strategies to solve the problems shown on the Lesson
Presentation. Can the children calculate change when paying with a £1 coin? Can they subtract two-digit
numbers and tens and a two-digit number from another two-digit number?
Finding Change Challenge Cards: The differentiated Finding Change Challenge Cards give the children the
opportunity to further practise these skills. Can the children calculate change when paying with a £1 coin?
Can they subtract two-digit numbers and tens and a two-digit number from another two-digit number?

Diving into Mastery: Schools using a mastery approach may prefer to use the following as an alternative
activity. These sheets might not necessarily be used in a linear way. Some children might begin at the ‘Deeper’
section and in fact, others may ‘dive straight in’ to the ‘Deepest’ section if they have already mastered the skill
and are applying this to show their depth of understanding.
Children identify the coins to work out how much is used to pay. They use subtraction to find the
amount of change. They need to know that £1 = 100p and use this information to find change when
£1 is paid.
Children reason whether the correct change has been given and explain what would happen if a
different item was bought.
Children work out how much money Jasmine has from looking at the coins. They recognise which
coins she could use to pay for the items. They write a subtraction calculation and work out the
answer. They may need coins to explore different possible combinations for the change.
True or False? Children work with a partner to decide whether the statements are true or false on the
Lesson Presentation.

Matchit: Provide children with a set of Money Matching Cards to 99p Mixed New Coins. Ask them to first play a matching pairs game by
turning over the cards to practise matching prices to coin totals. Vary the game by asking children to also say how much more
they need to make £1.
Trickit: Play a memory game by placing a 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coin on a tray. Cover the tray and remove a coin. Ask the children
which coin has vanished and how much more they need to make £1.
Shopit: Provide children with pretend coins, hundred squares and a set of Seaside Souvenir Shop Price Labels. Ask them to role play a
shopping game by finding the correct change for items under a pound.
Learnit: Children will find this superb Knowledge Organiser a great tool for supporting understanding of money.
