Technology has made the world very small. The world is now referred to as a global
village. What happens in one country or continents has a significant impact on the
rest of the world. Travel has changed due to technological advancement. It has
become easier to travel from one country to the next .To control this movement of
people to and from countries, countries put up borders through which this movement
can be managed. One is expected to produce certain documents to show why one
need to travel to that country and if one has obtained permission to do so from the
authorities of the country one wishes to visit. The authorities also have to determine
if the visitor to their country is not a carrier of some disease or illegal substances.

In Grade 10, you studied about Tourists and their reasons for travel. Based on the
introduction above and your Grade 10 knowledge of tourists and travel answer the
questions below.
1.1. Travel documents baseline assessment
Assessment Activity 1: Baseline – learners individual written or orally given
answers
● Write or give the name of a place you would you like to travel to.
● Mention the travel documents you will need to travel to that destination.
● Give the areas or points you would be required to present your travel
documents.
● Give the common name of the officials who will allow or refuse you to enter
the country.
● Give reasons that will inform their decision to allow or refuse your entry into
their country.

2.1 A valid
Passport

A passport is a legal document that allows a person to leave or


enter another country. All persons crossing a border must have this
document.
A South African passport is issued by the Department of Home
Affairs
Application for a Passport must be done in person in order for the
Home Affairs official to :
● verify legality and validity of your identity and verify your
photograph
● take your fingerprints

2.2 Visa
● It is an endorsement on a passport that gives a traveller
permission to be in another country for a specific period and
for a specific reason.
● It does not guarantee you entry to the country ,an immigration
official at customs will then determine if you are allowed to
enter
● It is obtained from the country`s embassy / consulate that you
wish to visit.

Requirements for a Visa:
• A valid acceptable passport / travel document
• Sufficient funds

Types of Visas

● Transit Visa : used to pass through a country to your final


destination
● Tourist Visa : issued to be used for a limited period of leisure
travel
● Working Holiday Visa: the holder can work in a country for a
precise period of time.
● Student Visa : allows holder to study in the specific country
● Medical Visa: holder can receive medical treatment (letter
from medical practitioner required )

● Schengen Visa : allows holder to travel in the 25 Schengen
Visa members in the European Union using one visa.
● Diplomatic Visa/ :issued to holder for official business or
accreditation

2.3 International It is a legal document that endorses (confirms) the licence that a
Drivers Permit driver already holds in their own country.
● It provides translation of the South African drivers licence in
many languages.
● It helps the tourist to rent a vehicle and obtain travel

A Health Certificate proves that a tourist has taken the necessary


health precautions.
● It can be provide by a doctor or a travel clinic that has
administered the necessary treatment to the tourist.
● E.g. a Yellow Fever certificate given to tourists inoculated
against Yellow Fever

Assessment Activity 4 : A Story about undocumented migrants in South Africa
Illegal immigration to South Africa
refers to migration of foreign nationals
to South Africa without the
authorisation of the South African
authorities. A range of estimates of
the size of the population of irregular
migrants in South Africa exist, but
these have been described as
inaccurate. The use of the term
"irregular", as opposed to "illegal", is
the accepted academic terminology.

No accurate estimates of the number of undocumented migrants living in South


Africa exist. Estimates that have been published vary widely. According to
Statistics South Africa's 2011 census, 6.2 million foreigners live in South Africa,
and the organisation's 2015 estimate places the number of undocumented
migrants between 1 200 000 and 1 500 000 undocumented migrants. A large
number of Zimbabweans have fled to South Africa as a result of instability in
Zimbabwe, with many living as undocumented migrants in South Africa.

These migrants come from all over the world with majority coming from countries
such as, Pakistan , India , China ,Zimbabwe ,DRC ,
Mozambique ,Nigeria ,Ghana ,Lesotho ,Swaziland ,etc
