Factor effecting soil compaction
1. Type of compaction
2. Compacting effort
3. Type of soil
4. Uniformity of soil water mixture
5. The particle size distribution of the soil sample
6. Moisture content in the sample
7. Original soil condition
8. Addition of admixture
Types of compaction
The soil compaction equipments can be divided
into two groups:Light soil compacting equipments
Heavy soil compacting equipments
Smooth wheel roller
use one large, smooth steel drum in the
front and either one or two wheels on
the rear end for compaction. These are
either tandem (two-wheel) or three-wheel
rollers. Smooth wheel rollers are ideal for
gravel, sand, ballast, and surface dressings.

Rammers:
What are rammers used for?
Rammer is light weight compaction
equipment used for compacting small
areas by providing impact load to
the soil. This compaction equipment is
light and can be hand operated or
machine operated.10-Nov-2017
What is a vibratory roller used
for?
Vibratory roller
They are commonly used for compacting
granular base courses and sometimes for
asphalt, and are useful for compacting to
greater depths. They have higher outputs and
improved performance compared to other rollers,
but also generally come at a higher cost.
permeability
The permeability of soil describes how
water (or other liquid) and air are
able to move through the soil. In the
case of rainfall or irrigation, water moves
very easily through highly permeable soils
and very slowly through soils with low
permeability.
Water content
The water content (w), also known as natural water
content or natural moisture content, is the ratio of
the weight of water to the weight of the solids
in a given mass of soil. This ratio is usually
expressed as percentage. When voids are completely
filled with air, water content is equal to zero (dry
soil).
Swelling
Shrink–swell is the volume change that occurs
as a result of changes in the moisture content
of clay-rich soils. Swelling pressures can cause
heave, or lifting of structures, whilst shrinkage can
cause settlement or subsidence, which may be
differential.
