GREEN DESIGN STRATEGIES
Sr. Design strategy Sketch
no.
1. Placement and orientation of blocks on site. (Site)
The amenity space has been placed right next to the road
for accessibility.
The commercial space is more on the side of the road as it
is a public space and placing it farther away from the
residential spaces creates a separation for privacy and
security.
The row houses are placed at the very end of the site for
as they are going to be lower in height which will provide
them sufficient sunlight and wind. They are placed at the
end also because the wind direction is from the south-
west direction and as the row houses are lower in height
they will not block the wind and the sunlight for the
apartment buildings.
The apartment buildings are placed at the middle of the
site as it is going to be the most populated space. Placing
it in the middle will have maximum people over there and
not create disturbance for the row houses. 3 different
blocks with different number of floors will be provided for
getting sufficient ventilation and sunlight.
2. Form of the apartment buildings. (Unit)
The form of the building is in such a way that 4
apartments will be provided on each floor.
All 4 apartments will have openings from 3 sides. This will
provide maximum sunlight and efficient ventilation for the
apartments.
Each apartment will have its sense of privacy as they are
separated by the circulation space in the center.
3. Staggered placement of the apartment blocks. (Cluster)
Placing the blocks in a staggered way helps efficient flow
of the wind. This will keep maximum spaces well
ventilated.
Open space will be created in between the buildings which
can be treated as green spaces, courtyards, gardens.
A sense of connectivity will remain between the 3
separate blocks.
4. Heights of the blocks. (Cluster)
The heights of the blocks differ for getting sufficient
ventilation and sunlight.
This also gives a visual connectivity and clear views of the
surrounding.
5. Buffer zones. (Site)
Creating buffer zones between the buildings and the roads
using plantations and green zones will help in reducing
noise levels, create a visual obstruction and will provide
privacy for the people living inside the building.
The buffer zones may be created using tall trees, dense
shrubs or a combination of a small water body and
plantation in between the building blocks and the roads.
6. Placement of row houses. (Cluster)
The row houses are not placed in a conventional way
where only two sides of the row houses have openings.
The row houses are staggered so that two sides can have
maximum number of openings and the other two sides
have partial number of openings.
This will also give the row houses more amount of open
space for the front yard or the backyard.
7. Extended balcony for the apartments. (Unit)
Each balcony will have a small extended balcony which
will be stepped down for planting small trees and shrubs.
This will create a green space for each of the apartments.
The plants and the trees will create a partial visual barrier,
sound barrier and will increase the visual connectivity
between human and nature.
8. Herb garden. (Site)
Herb garden will be provided at some green zones with
seating spaces.
This will be helpful for all the residents in the apartments
as well as the row houses.
It will introduce a different concept. Plants that can be
used will be planted at that specific area instead of just
green and flowering plants.
9. Solar panels and green roof. (Unit)
Solar panels will be provided at the topmost floor of each
building block for efficient energy.
Partial terrace of all the buildings will have solar panels
and partial terrace will have green roof.
Green roof will help in keeping the building cool which will
eventually lead to efficient energy use. Also the quality of
air will improve by providing green roofs.
10. Green pergolas and semi covered green spaces. (Site)
The site will have several green spaces but not all will be
landscaping and plantations.
For creating interaction spaces, some seating spaces will
be provided which will be semi covered.
Green pergolas will be provided for shading and cooling
effect. It will also add an aesthetic appeal to the
landscape areas while being functional at the same time.
11. Rain water harvesting, efficient irrigation systems for
gardens. (Site)
Rainwater harvesting system will be provided as it is a
quiet huge area, this will be one of the most efficient ways
for water management.
As there will be a lot of green spaces and gardens,
irrigation system is a very important aspect for the site.
Drip irrigation can be provided as it is easy to maintain
and efficient for use.
12. Pedestrian and vehicular pathways. (Site)
Pedestrian pathways alongside green buffer zones act as
safe and accessible connectivity between different areas
of the site.
Secondary and tertiary roads are important and will have
different uses and functions.
Pathways for bicycle may also be provided for easier
connectivity and encouraging the residents for cycling
promoting better health and well-being.
