MY UNUSUAL HOBBY – SAND SCULPTURES
I live on the coast of Ocean City, Maryland, where there are lots of beautiful sandy beaches
and warm sunny days. It’s the perfect place for my favourite hobby – making sand sculptures. Four
years ago, there was a sand sculpture festival near where I live. I couldn’t believe that such
wonderful model buildings, incredible creatures, and some amazingly realistic faces of celebrities
were all made out of sand. From that moment, I knew that this was something I would love to do.
I’ve heard people say that making sand castles is for kids, not adults, but that doesn’t bother me at
all. I believe sand art is a creative and playful hobby that can be enjoyed by all ages. People can
make different kinds of shapes and form structures out of their creative mind. The only materials
needed are water and sand – plenty of it, and lots of time. Creating a big sand sculpture may take up
to weeks to build. It also requires a lot of endurance and patience from the sculptors. Many people
don’t understand that even lightly touching a sand sculpture can make a whole section fall off,
which can take hours to rebuild. Of course, heavy rain can do some damage, but not as much as you
might think. As long as you build far enough up the beach, the waves won’t wash a sand sculpture
away. So, when you’re next at the seaside, make one yourself – you’ll get a great sense of
achievement.
31. The writer decided to start making sand sculptures after being impressed
by some near her house. True__________
32. Some people believe that making sand sculptures is only a hobby
for children. True__________

the 1990s it reopened to the public, and people today can enjoy its magic once more.

Audio script:
Daniel: Hi Kathleen. How was your trip to Vietnam?
Kathleen: It was amazing. I got incredible experiences. For example, I saw such a fantastic water
puppet show.
Daniel: Really? What was it like?
Kathleen: It was exactly as it sounds – puppets dancing and moving across the water. The
performers hid behind curtains and stages, from which they used rods to make their wooden puppets
move on top of the water.
Daniel: That sounds interesting.
Kathleen: Did you know that water puppetry dates back to the 11 th century, from the Red River
Delta?
Daniel: No way! What was the theme?
Kathleen: The main theme and setting of the show were about legends of kings and stories focusing
on Vietnamese rice farmers. The puppets portrayed boys riding on buffalos and dragons appearing
suddenly from underwater.
Daniel: How about the music? Were there any musical performances during the show?
Kathleen: Yes, there was a band playing traditional instruments like drums, horns, or single-stringed
guitars. Although the language of delivery was Vietnamese, it wasn’t hard to understand what was
happening on stage. There was also a show of firework that made the night sky colourful and the
scenery was completely amazing.
Daniel: How much was the ticket? Was it expensive?
Kathleen: Not at all. Tickets cost $8 for adults. I watched it in Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in
Hanoi. It’s the only theatre that runs shows for 365 days of the year, even in the winter. It’s
advisable to sit close to the stage as the puppets are pretty small. There’s also a shop near the theatre
where you can buy puppets for souvenirs.
Daniel: Wow! I’ll definitely try it when I come to Vietnam.
