GENERAL TOPOLOGY, SPRING 2025

PROBLEM SHEET 4

• Due date : Not for submission.

• Unless stated otherwise, each Rn (for finite n) comes with the standard
topology given by usual Euclidean distance.

1. List of problems
(1) For each of the following subset A ⊂ X identify the interior A◦ and the
closure A.
(A) X = R, A = Q;
(B) X = R, τ := {∅, Q, R}, A = [0, 1] ∩ Q;
(C) Consider the set X := M2 the set of all 2 × 2 matrices with real entries
with the metric d : M2 × M2 → [0, ∞] given by
1
d(A, B) := sup ∥Ax − Bx∥, where ∥y∥ := (y12 + y22 ) 2 .
x∈R2 ,∥x∥=1

(i) Show that (M2 , d) is a metric space.

(ii) Identify the closure and interior of the following subsets.
(A) A = {B ∈ M2 : d(B, 02×2 ) ≤ 1}, here 02×2 is the matrix
with each entry being 0,
(B) A = {B ∈ M2 : d(B, 02×2 ) ≤ 10},
(C) A = {B ∈ M2 : det B > 0},
(D) A = {B ∈ M2 : det B = 0},
(E) A = {B ∈ M2 : trace B = 0},
1 0
(F) A = {B ∈ M2 : BB T = B T B = }.
0 1

a a12
(G) A = { 11 ∈ M2 : a211 + a212 + a221 = a22 }.
a21 a22
(2) For a given fixed set A ⊂ R consider the following procedure : Denote
B0 := A and define for n ≥ 1,
(
X \ Bn−1 , if n is odd
Bn :=
Bn−1 , if n is even.
Let B := {Bn : n ≥ 0}.
(A) For each 1 ≤ n ≤ 12, give an example of a subset An ⊂ R, if possible,
so that the corresponding collection Bn has size exactly n.
(B) Is it possible to have a subset A ⊂ R, so that the corresponding col-
lection B contains infinitely many sets?
