Class 2

This document is a problem sheet for a General Topology course scheduled for Spring 2025. It includes two main problems related to identifying non-trivial bases for various topologies and demonstrating the equivalence of topologies derived from different metrics on R2. The problems are not for submission and are due on January 11, 2025.

GENERAL TOPOLOGY, SPRING 2025

PROBLEM SHEET 2

Due date : Not for submission.

1. List of problems
(1) Find a non-trivial (B ̸= τ ) basis B, if possible, for each of the following
topologies. Justify your claim.
(i) (X, d) is a metric space and τ is the metric topology coming from d.
(ii) R with co-finite topology :
τ := all subsets of R with finite complement ∪ {∅}.
(iii) R with co-countable topology :
τ := all subsets of R with countable complement ∪ {∅}.
(iv) (R, τ ) where τ is coming from the discrete metric d :
(
̸ y;
1, if x =
d(x, y) :=
0, if x = y.
(2) For each 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞ let τp be the topology on R2 coming from the metric
dp , where for x = (x1 , x2 ), y = (y1 , y2 ) ∈ R2 ,
( 1
(|x1 − y1 |p + |x2 − y2 |p ) p , if 1 ≤ p < ∞;
dp (x, y) :=
max(|x1 − y1 |, |x2 − y2 |), if p = ∞.
Show that these are all same topologies i.e. τp1 = τp2 for each p1 , p2 .
