Part 1: Calculating Caloric Content

Assuming that carbohydrates are 4 kcal/gram, proteins are 4 kcal/gram, and fats are 9
kcal/gram, calculate the total amount of calories for each of the items below.

1. A 14” Regular Crust pepperoni pizza contains 10 g fat, 36 g carbs, and 12 g protein per
slice. There are 6 slices in the pizza. How many calories are in the whole pizza? (4 points)

2. Chick-Fil-A Grilled Chicken Club sandwich contains 16 g fat, 36 g carbs, and 37 g of


protein. How many calories are in this sandwich? (4 points)

3. Wendy’s full-size Apple Pecan Salad (without dressing) contains 25 g fat, 28 g carbs, and
32 g protein. How many calories are in this salad? (4 points)

Part 2: Calculating Estimated Resting Metabolic Rate

Use Figures 2.23, 2.24, and 2.25 to help calculate the estimated RMR for the athletes below.

1. Sally is a 24-year-old female, 68” tall, and weighs 170 lbs, with 22% body fat. Calculate
her Estimated RMR using the equations below.
a. Mifflin-St. Jeor (4 points)

b. Cunningham (3 points)

RMR (kcal/d) = 1,826.6


c. Simplified RMR (3 points)

2. Bruce is a 23-year-old male, 6’2” tall and weighs 185 lbs, with 13% body fat. Calculate his
estimated RMR using the equations below.
