In-Class Task 1 Due:
Week 2
Task Description: Chapter one: Person Centered Care
For this assignment, using the information provided, students will write 1-page (or more at
instructors discretion) detailing how they would proceed with providing person-centered care to Kiran
Chaudrhi.
Health-care textbooks often begin with chapters discussing the design of the health-care system, the
members of the health-care team, and the unique role of the health-care provider. Certainly, this
information is necessary for your health-care education. However, a critical element of your training
is learning about the people who need your support.
Every person receiving care is an individual, and every person’s needs are correspondingly unique.
To help you explore the diversity of people with whom you may work with in your role as a -personal
care provider, below is a case study that shows how the concepts of the chapter can be adapted to
meet the distinct care needs of a particular person.
Focus on the Person:
Meet Kiran Chaudhri.
Ms. Chaudhri is a 21-year-old woman who lives in Toronto, Ontario. Three years ago, she was
diagnosed with lupus, which is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory disorder. Ms. Chaudhri’s
symptoms include fatigue, headaches, seizures, and joint pain. Usually, Ms. Chaudhri can manage
independently, but during flare-ups of her disorder when her pain becomes severe, she requires
home visits from a personal care provider to help with her bathing, dressing, and laundry. Ms.
Chaudhri has a close relationship with her parents, who emigrated from Pakistan when she was five
years old. Ms. Chaudhri attends college part-time, where she is studying computer programming. She
also enjoys participating in the Muslim Student Association.
Here are some things you should think about:
Focus on the person at the start:
➢ What do you know about this person?
➢ What additional information do you require?
➢ How can you adapt your care to meet this person’s needs?
➢ Refocus on the person at the end: Have you met this person’s needs to the best of your
ability?
➢ What have you learned about this person during your interaction?
➢ Based on this information, how can you improve your care for this person in the future?
