Summary: A Meth lab was raided in a small town in Pierce County, Washington. About 20 officers were prepared and planning to go in. The police found one culprit and arrested
him. Washington has the highest amount of Meth labs in the country and Pierce County is second county in the nation with the most labs. The number of home labs has increased over the years because the drug is one of the easiest to make. Lab busts, however, can cost form 1,000 to 10,000 dollars. Part of the costs is because of the dangerous chemicals and toxins needed to make the drug. Deputies have to wear airtight suits and be completely protected to clean up the labs, which is very dangerous. In another area of the state in Yakima Valley more labs are found. Most of the Meth cookers there are white and many of them are high while they are cooking which can often lead to fires. They police suspect two people involved in labs and when they see that they start cooking they arrest them and inside is a woman who is pregnant and has five other children. Child Protective Services is going to take custody of them. Response: I think its good that more and more Methamphetamine labs are being discovered and destroyed. Especially ones that involve children. I dont see how adults can put their children in such dangerous conditions. If they are addicted to the drug it doesnt mean that they should put their children through what they go through. They need to find help even if it means giving up their children.
Hopkins, Ellen. Crank. New York: Simon Pulse, 2004 Summary: Crank is a novel written by Ellen Hopkins that is based on her daughters addiction with Meth. Its written in poem form. I read a few pages of the novel and found
them interesting. Elizabeth is a teen who sadly becomes involved with the monster. In the beginning she says, Life was great before I met the monster. Elizabeth was a straight-A student, with many other talents, almost the perfect daughter but inside she feels lost. She feels like her family is not really there for her. She also explains of Bree, who she feels is another side of her; the girl she lets out when she is depressed and when she first tried Meth. Response: I thought the first few pages were very interesting. I enjoyed that the book was not normally written but it was written in poems. I didnt think a book about poems would be good but I thought that these really explained the story well and more than if it was written another way. They capture what she is feeling and it gives you a sense of knowing who she is. Its left me wanting to read more. "Methamphetamine (Meth)." Summary: Meth or Methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug that activates certain parts of the brain. Its a crystal-like, usually white or yellow substance that comes in a form of chunks and resembles glass. Some of its nicknames or slang terms are Crank, Crystal, Glass, Fire and Tweek. Methamphetamine can be taken orally, injected, snorted, or smoked. When Meth is consumed, people immediately experience an intense sensation that is said to extremely pleasurable. After the first reaction usually people enter a state of
agitation that can sometimes lead to violent behavior. Other reactions can be insomnia, decreased appetite, irritability, anxiousness, convulsions, and heart attack. When people begin to get addicted they need larger amounts of Meth and often skip meals and sleep. Addiction of the drug can cause paranoia, hallucinations, repetitive behavior, and delusions of parasites crawling in their skin. Long term use can lead to stroke or death. Response: Meth is a dangerous drug that can lead to many problems. I was unaware of the side effects of this drug. I think people should be more aware of the long term problems and how quickly they can become addicted. There should be more information for people to avoid this drug and if they havent, try to help them get away from it.
Kulish, Nicholas. "Europe Fears That Meth Foothold Is Expanding." The New York Times 23 Nov. 2007. Summary: Meth has recently been gaining popularity in Europe . In the Czech Republic , especially where various home meth labs have been found. In the span of five years the number of meth labs found by police increased from 19 in 2000 and 416 in 2006. Its spreading in Europe and more and more seizures caused by meth consumption are being reported. Many people choose to inject the drug rather than consume it a different way, which has led to an increase of Hepatitis C. The drug market has been increasing over the years in America and Europe and people are trying to put an end to it before it goes any farther. Small home meth labs are common in the Czech Republic as in the case of a man
in a small town there called Jesenik. He says he cooks meth but he does not sell it or teaches people how to cook it because he says that when you learn to cook then you will die. Response: I think if more things arent done to teach people to stay off this drug then it will continue to spread through Europe and other countries. Its probably difficult especially because those small towns and homes where people are cooking the drug are hard to find. People are used to that way of life and its hard to stop. What is dangerous is that people are injecting the drug and its easier to contract a disease like Hepatitis C or HIV. Many people say that cooking it can be dangerous because once a person starts its hard for them to start. Drug consumption is a horrible habit but its difficult to prevent because people are used to consuming those drugs and they will never completely go away. Volkow, Nora D. "Research Report Series Methamphetamine Abuse and Addiction." National Institute on Drug Abuse. Sept. 2006. National Institutes of Health. 28 Oct. 2008 <http://www.nida.nih.gov/ResearchReports/Methamph/ Methamph.html>. Summary: Methamphetamine is a very addictive drug that affects the nervous system. It can easily be made with over the counter ingredients which make it easier for it to spread. Its know by various names including speed, chalk, ice, crystal, crank and others. It was created about a hundred years ago from another drug called amphetamine, which was
used in nasal decongestants and brachial inhalers. Unlike amphetamine, methamphetamine has longer lasting effects and it gets into the brain quicker. The drug comes in many forms and it can be smoked, snorted, injected, or taken orally. Smoking gives the fastest effect followed by injection, snorting, and oral ingestion. The drug produces an intense rush after it is taken and then diminishes even if the drug concentration in the blood is still high. This is a reason why people become addicted; they consume more and more meth to maintain the high. Meth can increase wakefulness, physical activity, and decrease appetite. It can also cause cardiovascular problems and lead to death if overdosed. Long term- effects of meth lead to addiction, anxiety, insomnia, violent behavior, paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions. Chronic abuse of the drug can also cause changes in the brain. Currently there are no drugs that counteract the effects of methamphetamine but there are other medications for other diseases that can help relieve the addiction. Response: I think the police need to be more aware of places that can possibly produce the drug. The main problem is that people are taking the drug and sooner or later they are going to be addicted and wont be able to stop. It would also be useful to create medications or treatments that can help people to cure them of the addiction. People should also be more aware of the dangerous effects this drug can have and therefore they will be less likely to try it.
