(First Post) 10 Commonly Exppressive Filipino Words

and Examples
Hi! This is my very first post and before I proceed on sharing my art of my own 'Original Characters' I'll
post first about my task in school, entitled "10 commonly used Expressive Filipino Words and also it's
examples used in sentences.

1.) Kilig

-Kilig means characterized by a feeling of exhilaration or elation. Or easy known as you're feeling
romantic. (Butterflies in your belly) Like, feel thrilled to the bones when you see a romantic movie scene,
when two lovers went on a date and having fun.

-Examples in a sentence;

Jeanne is so kilig when she saw her crush on the hallway with a bouquet of roses and a box of chocolate
hidden in his back.

Arnold made Jenifer kilig when he successfully courts her to be her boyfriend.

Eileen was very kilig when she finished a romance novel.

2.) Tampo

-Tampo , in Philippine culture, refers to emotionally immature behavior in which a person withdraws his
or her affection or cheerfulness from a person who has hurt his or her feelings. The term has no precise
equivalent in English, though "sulking" or "to sulk" is often considered the closest translation. (From
Wikipedia)

-In other words, you're not either happy or angry, you're just in between, being silent , cold or neutral
after something wrong with your loved one. If you are tampo , you'll just ignore those funny and
cheerful things that your loved one did;Tampo people be like, face down or looking in the distance to
avoid distractions. They need a peace of mind when they are in the state of being tampo.
-Examples in a sentence:

Jennifer is tampo with her mom when she didn't give her promised birthday gift.

Angelo was tampo when found out that his GF didn't text him back.

Ate Marcia tries to take away the tampo out of her father, by singing his favourite song. (Her father was
so disappointed on her when she only got the 3rd place on the contest.)

3.) Gigil

Gigil means, trembling or gritting of the teeth in response to a situation that overwhelms your self-
control. It’s been commonly described as an irresistible urge to squeeze something cute.

-Examples in sentences:

- Gigi is so gigil in the face of her chubby bestie.

- Ken was gigil in his classmate that he faced an embarrassment situation between him and his admirer.

4.) Palangga/ Pangga

-"Panga" (pan-ga) in visayan language is an endearment word that is used to address someone whom
you love. it's close equivalent in english is "dear", "honey", "sweetheart" or yeah.... "love". I hope I got
what you meant right as the word "panga" when spoken literally in filipino can mean "jaw" or "jawbone"

- Other terms, it’s also used to describe a person whose favourite our loved by someone.

Examples in sentences:

- Pangga, can you pass me the bag? Thanks!

- Chrissie is the palangga of Ma’am Ibanez.

- We are all palanggas of our tito and titas.

5.) Kulit

-Kulit, means stubbornly sweet, nagging, crazy or just annoyingly cute. Most applied to young energetic
and hyperactive kiddies. (Makulit is an adjective of this kind of person.)

-Examples in sentences:

You're so makulit, let me spank you!

Dodoy is so kulit,he made fun of himself so the whole baranggay laughs at him.

I couldn't resist the kakulitan of Jepoy.

6.) Lumbay

higher degree of sadness. Described as anguish, grief and depressed.

-Example in sentences:

She looks so ma-Lumbay when someone to the last of her box of chocolates.

He was so luabay when he was busted by his crush.

7.)Diri/Kadiri
-Means disgust. The feeling when yu are in disgust on a smell or an object.

-Example in sentences:

Kadiri this place, it's so stinky!

His bag is so kadiri, the junk is cluttering the hallway.

8.) Basta

Means, "enough already" (Spanish term). But for most Filipinos, just get with it. Like just because, it's
just like that or simply just do it!

If an elder told something starts with basta, just say yes or just agree with it, since its a command or
simply respect.

Example in sentences:

Basta ikaw bahala sa Planong ito.(you are in charge in handling this event.)

Basta, you're sure in your final decision.

(Bonus for 9 and 10. PROFANITY!)

9.) Gago/ Gaga

Means silly, mindless and stupid person. (Like Lady Gaga being silly before, hence her name.)

Example in sentences:

Bert acts so Gago, he just tripped over the muddy road and crashed a party.

Lady Gaga's songs made people Gaga in 2010.

10.) Ulol/Ulul

Almost the same meaning in Baliw (crazy) but more insulting and harsher. Say this face to face after a
fight, one word means a lot, Ulol!

11.) Pakshet

A marriage of two well known profanities "Fuck and Shit", but Filipinos phoenetically say this in this way
Pakshet out of frustration.

Example: -Oh, this is just pakshet...

12.) Leche

Means milk in Spanish, but in filipino posh profanity it's something to say when you are in frustration
and Disgust ( whose ugly or not your type) ,Che is the shortened version of it, it means to shoo!

13.) Susmariyosep!

Since the Philippines lived rligiously, they are calling "Jesus, Mary and Joseph", in times of trouble, shock
and jeopardy. In other words breaking the 4th commandment, using God's name in vain.
