System of Inequalities Project Example

The Student Council at Eastern Middle School is organizing a charity bake sale to raise funds for a local animal shelter, aiming to sell a maximum of 250 items, including at least 80 cookies and 70 cupcakes, while achieving a profit of at least $400. The report utilizes a system of linear inequalities to guide planning and recommends focusing on selling an equal number of cookies and cupcakes to maximize profits. The analysis indicates that selling 125 of each will yield the highest profit within the feasible region.

Student Council Bake Sale Report

By: Mr. Guo

Oct 3rd 2024
Introduction:
The Student Council at Eastern Middle School is excited to announce the organization of a charity bake
sale aimed at raising funds for a local animal shelter. To ensure the success of this event, the council has
established several key goals and constraints. They plan to stock a maximum of 250 items in total, which
will include a combination of cookies and cupcakes. Specifically, they aim to sell a minimum of 80 cookies,
while not exceeding 150. For cupcakes, the goal is to sell at least 70, but no more than 125. Additionally,
the Student Council seeks to achieve a profit of at least $400, with cookies priced at $2 each and
cupcakes at $3 each. This report outlines the planning and strategies necessary to meet these
objectives and make the bake sale a success.

Method:
To support my final result I will apply a system of linear inequalities to limit the possible options when
planning for this bake sale. While I expect that actual implementation might be complicated by external
factors the math in this report can be used for general guidance and direction while planning this event.

Let:
X = the number of cookies sold
Y = the number of cupcakes sold

System of Inequalities:
1. Inventory Goal - Total baked goods sold should not exceed 250 items
𝑥 + 𝑦 ≤ 250
2. Cookies Goal - Total cookies must be between 80 and 150
80 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 150
3. Cupcakes Goal - Total cupcakes must be between 50 and 100
70 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 125
4. Profit Goal - Total Sales should be at least $400
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 ≥ 400

Graph: Recommendation:
After graphing the system of inequalities, I found
that the feasible region forms a hexagon with six
critical points. I recommend focusing on the
points (125, 125), which represent selling an equal
number of cookies and cupcakes. This choice is
based on my calculations, where plugging in this
critical point yielded the highest profit compared
to the others within the feasible region.
Implementing this strategy will help maximize our
earnings for the charity bake sale.
