f(x)= x2 -1
x +1

Since this equation has an asymptote at y=1,

2
we can say: lim 2 -1 =1
x
x ∞ x +1

The same can go the other way

x -∞ x +1

lim f(x)=L if f(x) gets closer and closer to L as x ∞

x ∞
lim f(x)=L if f(x) gets closer and closer to L as x -∞
x -∞

The line y=L is called a horizontal asymptote. Infinite

limits describe the asymptotic behavior of a function.

Infinite Limits
If a function tends to ∞ or -∞ as x approaches c, the limit
does not exist, but we can say it has an infinite limit.

When f(x) approaches ∞ or -∞ as x approaches c from one or

both sides, the line x=c is called a vertical asymptote.
