Algebra
Simplifying algebraic expressions
Note: ab=ba, xy=yx, ab2=b2a and xy2=y2x they are like terms
1. 4ab + 10bc − 2ab − 5cb
2. 3ba − ab + 3ab − 5ab
3. 4gh − 5jk – 2gh + 7
4. 2p2 − 5p2 + 2p − 4p
5. 2x2y − xy2 + 3yx2 − 2y2x
Writing algebraic expressions

i. The sum of a number and 7.
ii. Twice a number, increased by 5.
iii. A number divided by 3, minus 4.
2. Jamila is m years old.
Write expressions for the ages of each of these people.
a. Laila is 6 times as old as Jamila.
b. Maggie is 3 years older than Jamila.
c. Ami is 6 years younger than Jamila.
d. Iman is half the age of Jamila.
e. Rashid is 5 years older than twice Jamila’s age.
f. Ruth is 3 years younger than 5 times Jamila’s age.
3. Write an algebraic expression for the perimeter of a rectangle where the length is
represented by ‘l’ and the width is represented by ‘w’.
4. A car rental company charges a fixed fee of $20 plus $5 per day for renting a car.
Write an expression for the total cost (C) for renting the car for ’d’ days.
Writing formulae
1. Renting a car costs £15 per hour.
i. Write an expression for the cost for x hours.
ii. Write a formula,
2. Alika earns £9 per hour.
i. Write an expression for how much she earns in x hours.
ii. Write a formula for her earnings, E, in x hours.
3. An online company charges $5 to rent a film and $10 to download a film.
i. Write an expression for the cost for x hours.
ii. Write a formula,
Using formulae
F
1. The formula to calculate pressure (P) in N/m2 is P¿ , where: F = force in N and A = area in m2.
A
Work out the pressure
i. when F=200 N and A= 2 m2
ii. When F = 500 N and A = 0.5 m2
2. The approximate perimeter, P, of a semicircle can be calculated using the formula
3a
P=a+
2
Work out the approximate perimeter when a = 4 cm.
3. Use the formula b = 10t – c to work out the value of b when
i. t = 3, c = 5
ii. t = 1, c = 7
iii. t = 4, c = −2
iv. t = 3, c = − 4
EXPANDING BRACKETS
Expand and simplify:
i. 5(2 + 3a)
ii. 2(b – 4c)
iii. –3(2a + 8)
iv. –4(3 – x)
v. –(a – 2b)
vi. 3a + 2(a + 2b)
vii. 3(t – 4) – 6
viii. 7x – (x – y)
SOLVING EQUATIONS
1. 5x = 20
2. x + 5 = 20
3. x – 5 = 20
x
4. = 20
5
5. 20 – x = 5
