femininity itself, etc.) Identify a "symbol" in this story. Find a picture of the symbol and then discuss

SHORT STORY RESPONSE ASSIGNMENT
Story title: Beauty and the Beast Author’s name: Retold by Michael Foss
PLOT SUMMART: Write a short summary of what the story is about. Your summary must tell
what is happens at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the story. (6 – 12 sentences)
Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve is considered the original author of the story "Beauty and the
Beast". Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (26 April 1711 – 8 September 1780) was a French author who
wrote the best-known version of Beauty and the Beast. The version discussed in this assignment is the de
Beaumont adaption.
Beauty's father travels to town to seek his fortune. On his way home he gets lost in a dark forest. It is
during the winter so he almost freezes to death. He stumbles across a mysterious and comforting castle that
is warm and full of nice breezes and good food. When he is leaving he takes a rose. Suddenly a ferocious
beast appears and threatens to kills for the theft of the rose. The father explains that the rose is for his
daughter Beauty. The beast lets him go as long as her promises to send his daughter. Beauty, although
afraid, agrees to go live in the castle with the beast. Over time Beauty comes to love the beast for his heart
instead of his outward appearance. She agrees to marry the beast. This breaks and curse and the beast
turns into a handsome prince. Beauty and her prince live happily ever after. (153 words)
SETTING & MOOD: 1) Describe CONFLICT: Types of conflict – P means person

Describe how the story makes you feel. Technology; P vs. Unknown. Identify one type of conflict in
the story and discuss how it is resolved.
The story is taking place in the past. There

The story makes me feel sad at first when doesn't know what type of creature the beast is.
Beauty is forced to live with the Beast. I feel
happy and relieved when Beauty's love frees
the beast from the curse.
CHARACTERS: Type of characters - Protagonist = good; Antagonist = bad. Choose two
characters in the story and describe their relationship with each other. Which character is the antagonist and
which is the protagonist? Give at least two specific examples from the text to prove your points.
The main characters in this story are both good characters: Beauty and the Beast. They both have good
hearts and are willing to learn to trust each other.
The Antagonist in the story are Beauty's selfish siblings. Their greed is what causes the father to have the
unfortunate encounter with the Beast. Also, the Beast can be first seen as an antagonist since he threatens
Beauty's father with death if he doesn't send his daughter to live with him.
THEME: The main lesson or moral of the story. 1) Discuss what lesson(s) the characters learn by
the end of the story. 2) Discuss how the lesson(s) learned can relate to something in your own life.
There are many lessons to learn in this story.
- One is the idea that true beauty comes from within. If you are a good person who cares for others you will
look beautiful even if your are not outwardly attractive.
- Dare to be different. The beast is different and unusual but so is Beauty. Her kindness and dedication is
opposite to the selfishness of her siblings. These qualities are what leads to her ultimate happiness.
- Stand up for yourself. Although she is afraid, Beauty does not let her fear prevent her from finding true
love and overcoming hate.
- Be grateful for what you are given,” he replied, “but do not believe all you see. (176)
- Do not sigh for the past. Have faith and do not believe in appearances only. Great things await you in the
future.” (176)
One thing I learned from this story is to not worry about the past but instead look towards the future.
Things that have happened in the past whether good or bad are over and done with. For example, if I did
not get a good mark on a test last week, I need to get over it and focus on improving my understanding this
week so that I will do better in the future.
