Introduction:
Energy consumption has become a growing concern for
Gurgaon, where rapid urban development and population
growth are straining resources and contributing to
environmental challenges. In schools, high energy use has
both financial and environmental implications. The Energy
Saving System for schools in Gurgaon aims to address these
issues by implementing technology-driven solutions that can
significantly reduce energy waste. Through smart lighting,
temperature control, and automated monitoring, our project
will help schools reduce energy consumption, lower costs,
and minimize their carbon footprint.
This project is particularly relevant to Gurgaon, a city where
electricity demand has surged by 50% in the last decade due
to commercial and residential expansion. By adopting
energy-saving technology in educational institutions, we can
set a precedent for sustainable practices across the city,
helping communities save costs while reducing environmental
impact.
Problem Statement:
In schools across Gurgaon, energy waste is a common issue,
with lights, air conditioners, and heating systems frequently
left on when classrooms are empty. During peak hours, this
waste contributes to increased energy demands, the city's
power shortages and leading to higher utility bills for
institutions. Studies on school energy audits indicate that
inefficient energy practices can increase a school’s energy
expenses by 15-25%. In Gurgaon’s hot climate, air
conditioning alone accounts for 60-70% of the school’s total
energy usage, making it the primary source of energy waste.
Impact on Community:
Excessive energy consumption in schools has both immediate
and long-term effects on Gurgaon’s community. In addition to
financial strain, high energy usage contributes to frequent power
outages and environmental pollution. Gurgaon, known for its rapid
urban development, already struggles with air quality issues,
largely due to energy production from fossil fuels. According to
data from 2023, nearly 70% of Gurgaon’s energy is still generated
from non-renewable sources, contributing significantly to carbon
emissions and air pollution levels. With schools accounting for
approximately 10% of urban energy consumption, reducing their
demand can make a tangible impact on the city's energy footprint.
The more energy schools consume unnecessarily, the greater the
demand on the local power grid. By cutting energy use, schools
could decrease demand, potentially lowering energy-related
emissions by up to 15% over time, which could contribute to
improved air quality.
Additionally, conserving energy in educational institutions would
allow schools to redirect the funds saved on energy bills toward
educational resources, facilities, and extracurricular programs. If
schools reduce their energy costs by even 20%, they could
potentially reallocate tens of thousands of rupees annually. By
integrating the Energy Saving System into Gurgaon schools, we
can help the city move closer to its sustainability goals, benefiting
students, staff, and the broader community.
