PREPOSITIONS

Prepositions tell you the relationships


between other words in a sentence.
Prepositions of Direction
To - point
• She drove to the shore.
In/Into - action is directed inward
• Come in/into the house
On/Onto - action is taking place in the
direction of the surface
• Drive on/onto the grass and park the
car there.
Prepositionsof Location
In – an area or volume
• I live in the Philippines.
At – specific location
• She will find him at the library.
On – surface
• There is an apple on the table.
Prepositions of Place

In – the point itself


• They will meet in the lunchroom.
At – specific address or place
• She was waiting at the corner.
On – the surface
• He left his bad on the table.
Prepositions of Place
Over and above – object higher than a point.
• The bird flew over the house.
Below and under – object lower than a point.
• Juan Tamad is sleeping under the tree.
By, near, next to, between, - object close to a
point.
• Our house is next to the park.
Prepositions of Time
In - parts of the day (not specific time),
months, years, and seasons.
• He reads in the morning.
• The weather is cold in December.
• She was born in 1989.
• I will leave in summer.
Prepositions of Time
At – time of the day. Can also use with
“noon”, “night”, and “midnight”.
• I go to work at 8:00.
• He often goes for a walk at night.
• They go to bed at midnight.
Prepositions of Time
On – days

• I will go to Baguio on Monday.


• I work on Saturdays.
Prepositions of Transportation
In – the object is still.
• I am in the car.
On – for a large transportation.
• Ana is on the plane.
By – general ways of transport.
• I went to school by bus.
