Section E
The following questions are source-based / case-based questions. Read the case carefully and answer the
questions that follow.
37. Honey is widely used and therefore bee keeping for making honey has become an agricultural enterprise.
Since bee-keeping needs low investments, farmers use it as an additional income generating activity. In
addition to honey, the beehives are a source of wax which is used in various medicinal preparations. The
local varieties of bees used for commercial honey production are Apisceranaindica, commonly known as
the Indian bee, A. dorsata, the rock bee and A. florae, the little bee. An Italian bee variety, A. mellifera,
has also been brought in to increase yield of honey.
The Italian bees have high honey collection capacity. They sting somewhat less. They stay in a given
beehive for long periods, and breed very well. For commercial honey production, bee farms or apiaries
are established. The value or quality of honey depends upon the pasturage, or the flowers available to
the bees for nectar and pollen collection. In addition to adequate quantity of pasturage, the kind of
flowers available will determine the taste of the honey.
(1) Which species of bee is commonly known as the Indian bee?
(a) Apisceranaindica
(b) Apisdorsata

(d) Apis florae
(2) Which species of bee is commonly known as the rock bee?

38. The distance between two consecutivecompressions (C) or two consecutiverarefactions (R) is called the
wavelength. The wavelength is usually represented by λ (Greek letter lambda). Its SI unit is meter (m).
•If we can count the number of the compressions or rarefactions that cross us per unit time, we will get
the frequency of the sound wave. It is usually represented by υ (Greek letter, nu). SI unit is hertz (symbol,
Hz).
•The time taken for one complete oscillation is called the time period of the sound wave. It is represented
by the symbol T. Its SI unit is second (s).Frequency and time period are related asfollows: υ=1/λ
•The speed of sound is defined as the distance which a point on a wave, such as a compression or a
rarefaction, travels per unit time.

39. The mass of an atom is due to the masses of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. The relative masses of
protons and neutrons are almost equal to one. Therefore, the atomic mass of an element should be nearly
a whole number. But in many cases the atomic masses are fractional. The main reason for these fractional
atomic masses is that these elements occur in nature as a mixture of several isotopes. The atomic mass of
an element is the average of the atomic masses of these isotopes in the ratio of their proportion of
occurrence.
1. Chlorine occurs in nature in the form of two isotopes with atomic masses 35 u and 37 u in the ratio of
3 : 1 respectively. The atomic mass of chlorine is
(a) 35.5 u (b) 34.5 u (c) 35 u (d) 36 u

abundance of two isotopes in the sample having an atomic mass of 10.80?
(a) 20, 80 (b) 50, 50 (c) 25, 70 (d) 60, 40
3. The fractional atomic masses of elements are due to the existence of
(a) isotopes having different masses
(b) diagonal relationship
(c) equal number of electrons and protons
(d) none of these.
