Lesson 28: Talking About Possession

In this lesson, we will focus on how to talk about possession using the verb avoir (to have) and
possessive adjectives.

1. Using the Verb "Avoir" (To Have)

The verb avoir is used to express possession, and it’s one of the most important verbs in French.

Conjugation of avoir in the present tense:

 J’ai (I have)

 Tu as (You have - informal)

 Il/Elle/On a (He/She/One has)

 Nous avons (We have)

 Vous avez (You have - formal or plural)

 Ils/Elles ont (They have)

Example Sentences:

 J’ai un livre. (I have a book.)

 Tu as une voiture. (You have a car.)

 Elle a un chien. (She has a dog.)

 Nous avons des amis. (We have friends.)

 Vous avez un ordinateur. (You have a computer.)

 Ils ont une maison. (They have a house.)

2. Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives are used to show possession or ownership of something. They must agree in
gender and number with the noun they describe.

Here’s a list of the possessive adjectives in French:

Possessor Masculine Singular Feminine Singular Plural

I (je) mon (my) ma (my) mes (my)

You (tu) ton (your) ta (your) tes (your)

He/She (il/elle) son (his/her) sa (his/her) ses (his/her)

We (nous) notre (our) notre (our) nos (our)

You (vous) votre (your) votre (your) vos (your)

They (ils/elles) leur (their) leur (their) leurs (their)

Example Sentences:

 Mon livre est intéressant. (My book is interesting.)

 Ma voiture est rouge. (My car is red.)

 Ton frère est gentil. (Your brother is kind.)

 Ta sœur est belle. (Your sister is beautiful.)

 Ses amis sont sympas. (His/her friends are nice.)

 Notre maison est grande. (Our house is big.)

 Vos enfants sont mignons. (Your children are cute.)

 Leurs parents sont gentils. (Their parents are kind.)

3. Using "Avoir" and Possessive Adjectives Together

You can combine avoir and possessive adjectives to talk about things you or others have.

Example Sentences:

 J’ai mon téléphone. (I have my phone.)

 Tu as ta montre. (You have your watch.)

 Il a son ordinateur. (He has his computer.)

 Nous avons notre chat. (We have our cat.)

 Vous avez vos clés. (You have your keys.)

 Ils ont leurs livres. (They have their books.)
