Magway University Deparment of Botany Group-4 Module No - Bot-3103 Microbiology Penicillium

Penicillium, discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928, is a saprophytic fungus known for its antibacterial properties, leading to the development of the first antibiotic. It has significant medical importance, industrial applications in antibiotic and enzyme production, and plays a crucial ecological role as a decomposer. The fungus is economically significant with diverse uses in medicine, industry, and food production.

Introduction
• Penicillium was the first antibiotic to be discovered.
• It was discovered in1982 by Alexander fleming a Scottish scientist
working in St Mary’s Hospital London.
• Fleming discovered that mould from a penicillium fungus had
antibacterial properties. The antibiotic was named penicillium
after the fungus.
• Penicillium us a saprophytic fungus,com-monly known as blue or
green mold.
• They are present in soil,in air,on decaying
fruits,vegetables,meat,etc.
Classification
Kingdom-Fungi
Phylum -Ascomycota
Class -Euascomycetes
Order -Eurotiales
Family -Trichomaceae
Genus -Penicillium
Characteristics
• Morphology :Penicillium species typically have a brush-like
spore-producing structure called a conidiophore,from which
chains of asexual spores(conidia)emerge.
• Growth : It grows rapidly in most enviroments, forming
green,blue or white colonies.
• Reproduction :Primarily reproduces asexually through
conidia, although sexual reproduction occurs in some species.
Medical importance

• Penicillium notatum(now P.chrysogenum) led to the

discovery of penicillium, the first widely used antibiotic.
• Some species produce mycotoxin that can be harmful to
humans and animals.
Industrial Applications
• Used in the production of antibiotics, enzymes, and organic
acids (e.g,citric acid)
• Some species aid in cheese production, such as
P.roqueforti(blue cheese) and P.camemberti(Camembert and
Brie)
Ecological Role
• Functions as a decomposer breaking down organic matter
and recycling nutrients in ecosystem.
Conclusion
• Penicillium is a versatile and economically significant fungus
with diverse applications in medicine, industry, and food
production. Its discovery and study have had profound
impacts on science and human health.
