INTRODUCTION
➢Secondary storage devices are hardware that
store data long-term, even when a computer is
turned off.
➢They are used to store files, applications, and
operating systems.
➢Secondary storage devices are also known as
external memory or auxiliary storage.
CHARACTERISTICS
• Non-volatile
Secondary storage devices retain data even when the
computer is off, unlike primary storage devices like
RAM. This is important for long-term data storage.
• High capacity
Secondary storage devices can store large amounts of
data, from a few gigabytes to several terabytes.
• Cost-effective
Secondary storage devices are generally less
expensive than primary storage devices per unit of
storage. However, the cost can vary depending on the
type of device.
• Slower data access
Secondary storage devices are generally slower than
primary storage devices because data transfer is not
as direct or immediate.
• Portable
Secondary storage devices are external devices that
can be connected to different computer systems.
• Durable
Secondary storage devices are highly durable.
Other characteristics to consider when choosing a
secondary storage device include:
TYPES OF SECONDARY STORAGE
DEVICES
• Magnetic storage devices: Use magnetic fields to
write data to a spinning metal disk. Examples include
hard disk drives (HDDs) and floppy disks.
• Optical storage devices: Store data on optical media,
such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. CDs are
commonly used for audio and software, DVDs for
multimedia files, and Blu-ray discs for high-
definition video content and large multimedia files.
• Solid state storage devices: Examples include solid
state drives and USB memory sticks.
IMPORTANCE
Secondary storage devices are important because
they provide long-term, non-volatile data storage, and
can be used for backups and disaster recovery:
• Backup storage: Secondary storage devices can be
used to back up data, even if the power goes out.
• Long-term storage: Secondary storage devices can
store data for long periods of time.
• Data transfer: Secondary storage devices can be
used to transfer data between devices.
• Lower cost: Secondary storage devices can be less
expensive than primary storage.
CONCLUSION
❖Secondary storage devices are the most valuable
devices in the system.
❖ It is not in the computer, where data can be
stored permanently, without direct
accessibility.
❖It also has a larger capacity to store data.
Secondary storage devices are necessary because
data on primary storage can be lost easily.
❖Hence, this gives users an assurity to save their
work even if the device gets turned off. That is
why it is called a non-volatile storage device.
❖The data will be there on the storage device until
and unless it is edited or deleted by the user.
