Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives them of
their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is physically,
socially or morally dangerous. This practice is considered exploitative by many international
organisations and it is prohibited by many legislative powers across the world.
Although companies are aware that child labour is unethical and forbidden, many of
them like and continue to employ children because they can pay them less than adults. Very
few children know enough about their legal rights to ask for better pay and working
conditions; in addition to this, the parents of working children rarely protest, they need the
child’s salary to survive.
The International Labour Organization estimates that 168 million children between the
ages of 5 and 17 currently work under conditions that are considered illegal and extremely
exploitative. Although Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest incidence rates of child labour, this
phenomenon also exists in Europe and the United States.
Underage children work at all sorts of jobs around the world, usually because they and
their families are extremely poor. Large numbers of children work in fishing, manufacturing,
mining, and domestic service. Some children work in illicit activities like the drug trade and
others serve as soldiers. Worldwide agriculture is the largest employer of child labour; that is
why, vast majority of child labour is found in rural settings and informal urban economy.
