MM4: How to set up the encoder module

Entry ID: 11714041

Date: 05/24/2002

QUESTION:
How should I set up the encoder module?

ANSWER:
The encoder module is straightforward to set up; only a few parameters need to be set. However,
note the following:

The encoder only works in Vector Mode. First set up the drive in Sensorless Vector Mode (see
FAQ 7494205) P1300 = 20.

Follow the connection instructions in the handbook and check that the LED indicators for the A and
B (if used) signals are flashing when the motor moves.

Enable the encoder using P0400.

Set P0408 to the correct number of pulses per revolution.

r0061 will indicate the rotor speed as read by the encoder. This is very useful for checking the rotor
speed and direction is correct.
If the speed indicated here is significantly different to the actual motor speed / frequency, it is
possible that P0408 is incorrectly set.
If the sign of r0061 is different, the A and B pulses need to be swapped, or the phase sequence of
the motor needs reversing as the encoder direction is incorrect.
If r0061 looks OK, the closed loop speed control can be enabled by setting P1300 to 21.

The speed loop can be optimised by tuning the P and I parameters (P1460 and P1462).
Autotuning using P1960 will optimise P1460 only. P1470 and P1472 are for Sensorless Vector
Control stability only, and are not used in encoder operation.

P0492 and P0494 may be adjusted if F0090 occurs (encoder feedback loss). P0492 selects the
allowable difference in calculated speed signals between samples before it is considered to have
lost the speed signal feedback. P0494 applies a filter to the to the output of P0492.

P0491 is used to set the reaction to speed loss; that is, trip or run in SVC giving a warning.
