MATHEMATICS IN
THE MODERN WORLD
Module 2: Mathematical Language and Symbols

ENGAGE
Imagine the following scenarios:
1. Can you imagine how you would be able to communicate with a seatmate in the bus who
speaks an entirely different language from yours? How will you be able to tell him to watch
over your baggage as you get off the bus for a while to buy something.
I will tell him to keep an eye on my baggage while I get off the bus to buy it by using sign
language. I will show communication with my seatmate and express my thoughts through
nonverbal gestures. Thus, I needed to be patient and calm in order to communicate my
situation.

2. You’re in Math class, and the instructor passes a piece of paper to each student. It is
announced that the paper contains Study Strategies for Students in Mathematics; you are to
read it and make comments. Upon Glancing at the paper, however, you observe that it is
written in a foreign language that you do not understand. What do you think, is the instructor
being fair?
I don't think the instructor is being fair, but rather teaching us a lesson through this. For
instance, mathematics is written in a foreign language not because it is complicated, but
because it requires a better understanding because it is presented in mathematical
language. Therefore, the scenario indicates the analogy of mathematics.
