Box Sewer Design Calculations Guide
Box Sewer Design Calculations Guide
A simple box culvert needs to be designed taking into account the topography
of the land provided and the following data:
Desnivel m 105 m
S¿ S¿
longitud km 1.9 km
S = 55.26 m/Km
m3
Qd = 12.36
sg
2.- Calculation of hydraulic section
Q=V*A
Q=V*B*L

Yes: V R2 /3 = * * S1 /2

Where: R = Hydraulic radius of the section R=
P
P = Wet perimeter
1A 2 /3
Qd (m3/sg n P ¿ S

)=*(**A
To find the cross section of the culvert, the flow rate is calculated for different
values of slope, height and width of the culvert, it is compared with the
hydrologically calculated flow rate and the most approximate flow rate is
assumed, taking care that the velocity value does not exceed 3 m/s and that
the height is between 50% and 80% of the width in the cross section of the
culvert.
After iterating, the width L = 2.5 m is chosen. and S = 0.21%, then we have:
4.375
R=
6
R = 0.729167
1 4.375 2 /3
Q m3/sg = 0.013 *( 6 ¿ * 0.00211 /2 * 4.375
So for 2.5 meters of internal side and a height of the embankment of 2.90
meters on the axis we have:
The lengths of the box are calculated from the axis to the left (L1) and to the
right (L2).
According to the topography of the terrain, the direction of the fins is assumed
to be 45°.
The length of the fin depends on the side of the box, for L=2.5m the fin length
F is 2.75m.
The height is taken from the box at the adjacent end and at the tip, it is
assumed to be 2 meters. Which is recommended for sewers up to 3x3
meters.
The thickness of the wall is 0.25 meters. For 2.5 x 2.5 m sewers.
