VERTEBRATES AND INVERTEBRATES

All animals belong to the Animal Kingdom.

There are two groups of animals Invertebrates and Vertebrates,
INVERTEBRATES
Invertebrates do not have a spinal
cord or a backbone. Their bodies are
supported by an exoskeleton or a
hydrostaticskeleton.
Invertebrates do not have a brain as
such. Instead they have a simple system
of nerves that connect to the gangalia.
They respond to the environment with
information that is processed in the
gangalia.

VERTEBRATES
Vertebrates do have a spinal cord
whichis protected by the backbone.
The spinal cord holds the nerve system
that connects the brain to the other
parts of the animal body like the legs
heart, lungs, stomach and so on. The
spinal cord is a jelly- like thread of
millions of nerve cells.

EXOSKELETONS
Some animals have exoskeleton that are outside their bodies.
These
skeletons are called exoskeletons.
Animals that have exoskeletons include insects, spiders and
scorpions,
crabs, lobster, and prawns, millipedes and centipedes and
earthworms.
HYDROSTATIC SKELETON
Some animals have hydrostatic skeletons.
These skeletons provide support using the body
fluids inside
the animal’s bodies.
The animals include snail, octopuses and sponges.

ENDOSKELETON
VERTEBRATES animals have internal or ENDOSKELETONS.
These skeletons are made of bones or cartilage found inside
the animal. Some animals that have internal skeletons are:
BONY FISH: Gold fish, carp, hake
AMPIBIANS: Frogs and toads
BIRDS: swallows, ostriches, weavers, hornbills
REPTILES: snakes, lizards, crocodile, tortoises and turtles.
MAMMALS: Humans, mice, bats, whales
