Geomatics Engineering Lab: Auto Level Study

The document outlines a practical lab session for the study of Auto Level in Geomatics Engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia. It introduces the concepts of Geodetic and Navigational GPS, detailing the equipment used in Geodetic GPS, including the controller, receiver, battery, and tripod. The lab aims to familiarize students with the functions of these components to enhance their surveying skills.

INTRODUCTION

Geomatic is a subset of study in the discipline of Geography. Geography is the study

of the arrangement, interaction, and change of the physical or natural features and human

activity on and near Earth’s surface. Geomatic involves wide range of methods and

techniques for collecting, managing and analyzing data about Earth and the phenomena

arranged on and near its surface. An important component of geomatic is Geographic

Information System (GIS). GIS uses spatial data to explore geographic phenomena. GIS

includes communicating and visualizing spatial data, these aspects of GIS are commonly

associated with the field of cartography.

There are two types of Geographic Information System (GIS) which are Geodetic

GPS and Navigational GPS. Geodetic GPS is used for precise work. It provides quite

accurate results. To obtain very accurate results, Geodetic GPS can be used in differential

mode called Differential GPS (DGPS). Its various components are controller, receiver and

battery.

Navigational GPS is also known as hand held GPS. It is a single unit, small in size,

consisting of controller, receiver and battery. Being light weight, it is easy to carry hand held

GPS in the fields, however it provides medium accuracy in results.

In this lab, we are introducing with all the equipment that are used in surveying work.

Before go further with this topic, it is important for us to known well with the function of

every part of the equipment and know the way to use it properly. By this knowledge, we can

do our survey work smoothly.

OBJECTIVES

1. To study Global Positioning System and its accessories to find out location of

various point using Geographic Information System (GIS).

3
EQUIPMENT AND DESCRIPTION

1. Equipment used in Geodetic GPS.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

1. Controller Controller is used to display the

signal strength received from the

satellites and also to control and

display the observation. Field

observations are stored in the

controller device.

2. Receiver Receiver plate is normally mounted

on a tripod or single pole. This plate

receives signals from GPS satellites.

4
3. Battery Battery is a source of power supply

to the controller and receiver

systems.

4. Tripod It is used to mount the GPS, so that

the instrument is stable.

CONCLUSION

In the end of the lab, students were learned two types of Global Positioning System

(GPS) which are Geodetic and Navigational GPS. Besides that, students also can learn some

types of equipment used in Geodetic Global Positioning System work like receiver,

controller, battery and tripod.
