LEADERSHIP STATEMENT
Thank you for taking the time to engage with your project team to ensure the safe
execution of this work for Unilever. In line with our commitment to employee and
contractor health and safety and supported by our statement on human rights and
Responsible Sourcing Policy, we are proud to offer this collection of safe procedures for
construction. These references are designed to support the project leader all the way
through to the front line worker on a project. We have taken care to provide a format which
is highly visual, universal and based upon the best practices for construction safety
practices. This is a working document and is as important as a hard hat or set of reliable
safety shoes. It should be distributed widely and used by all members of the project team.
The better you are engaged with your workers, the stronger the culture of safety becomes.
As you work with this tool, please make sure to provide feedback on what is successful,
what needs improvement and any errors. Unilever strives for a zero incident workplace
and we are your partners in achieving that goal.

• When performing non routine activities, the guide can be used to assist with field verification of work permit
requirements.
• Use the field guide as a tool to start conversations with workers and to facilitate safety observations.
• Use to help develop hazard and control awareness among workers, supervisors and team leaders at meetings,
field visits, shift turnovers and any other opportunity.
• The guide may be used as a checklist to help identify gaps in controls during near-miss and incident investigations.
• The field guide can be used as an audit or self-audit tool.
• Provide the guide to people new to the site for use as onboarding and general awareness training reference material.
