Volumetric Analysis2024

The document outlines a procedure for determining the concentration of a potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution by titrating it against a standard solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate. It includes the chemical reactions involved, materials required, and a step-by-step procedure for preparation and titration. The calculations for molarity and strength of the KMnO4 solution are also provided.

VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS

ESTIMATION OF KMnO4 SOLUTION

KMnO4 VS FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4 . 6H2O

Aim

To determine the concentration of KMnO4 solution by titrating it against standard

solution of ferrous ammonium

Theory

Ferrous ammonium sulphate acts as a reducing agent in the titration against

potassium permanganate. The reaction which takes place is given below :

Ionic equation:

Reduction half reaction : MnO4- + 5e– + 8H+ → Mn2+ + 4H2O

Oxidation half reaction : Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e– ] × 5
___________________________________________________________________________
MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ → Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O
___________________________________________________________________________

Material Required

• Measuring flask (100 mL) , Burette (50 mL) , Burette stand , Pipette(100) ,Conical
flask ,Glazed tile (white) , Funnel etc.,

SHORT PROCEDURE

Preparation of 0.05 M, standard solution of Ferrous ammonium sulphate .

(Molar mass of FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4 . 6H2O = 392 g mol–1).

w2 x 1000
Molarity(M) =
M2 x V in mL

M2 x V x M
w2 =
1000

392 x 100 x 0.05

w2 = = 1.960 g
1000
 1.960 g of ferrous ammonium sulphate transfer it into a 100 mL
measuring flask .
 Made the solution upto the mark using distilled water and dilute
H2SO4

Calculations :

a) Molarity calculation

The strength of unknown solution in terms of molarity may be determined by the

following equation :
a1 M1 V1 = a2 M2 V2

(FAS) (KMnO4)

a1 = 1, (the number of electrons lost per formula unit of ferrous ammonium

sulphate in the half cell reaction)

a2 = 5, (the number of electrons gained per formula unit of potassium

permanganate in a half cell reaction)

 Volume of FAS solution V1 = 10ml (Taken in pipette )

 Molarity of FAS solution M1 = 0.05 M
 Volume of KMnO4 solution V2 = ----------ml (concordant Reading –Burette
reading)

Molarity of KMnO4 solution (M2)

M1 x V 1 x a1
M2 (KMnO4) =
a2 x V2(concordant value)

0.05 x 10 x 1
M2 =
5 x V2 (concordant value)

= 0.0xxx M

b)Strength calculation

Strength can be calculated by the formula given below :

Strength(KMnO4 ) = Molarity (KMnO4 ) × Molar mass (KMnO4 )

= --------- mol/L x 158 g/mol

= -------------g/L

Result:

The strength of the given potassium permanganate solution is _____ g/L.
