Section 85 - GED0119 FA1

“You and me, we grow different, but are the same”

Generational gap is a constant shadow in the league of communication. This generational gap
resulted in a barrier particularly to Generation Y and Baby Boomers that makes it harder to achieve
meaningful communication to have a deeper understanding to one another. There are numerous factors as
to why Generation Y and Baby Boomers often ‘bump heads’ in communication, and these factors are:
medium choice in communicating, instilled attitudes and values, different upbringing approaches,
historical background, and status in socioeconomic aspect. Although there are numerous factors as to why
the generational gap is an obstacle to having meaningful communication, as cliche as it sounds - respect,
guidance, and openness bridges the gap in more ways than one (Venter, 2017).

Respect and openness goes a long way in bridging the gap between the specified generation
because this paves the way in understanding how each generation express themselves via the
accumulation of values, points of view, and experiences which shape them as individuals. This creates a
suitable approach in meaningful communication wherein both generation feels valued regardless of age
(Berkeley Executive Education, 2024). These show the desire to have an understanding beyond the
superficial level due to the effort that goes into communicating where both parties are ready to learn from
one another by sharing experiences and knowledge.

With the sharing of experiences and knowledge, one must guide the other in order for
misunderstanding not to happen. Guidance in the form of mentorship is beyond helpful in immersing both
generations in such experience and knowledge that each generation came to value (Downs, 2019). For
example, Generation Y can guide the Baby Boomers to see the importance of technology in the way that
they are accustomed to that shows ‘time-effectiveness’, whereas Baby Boomers can show the importance
of face-to-face communication in ‘trivial things’ that Generation Y believes, by showing the importance
of ‘presence’. This simple mentorship can bridge the generational gap little by little so that both
generations will learn to understand each other and no ‘lost love’ is present.

Therefore, forming guidance, respect, and openness and letting it grow shows the importance of
bridging the gap of both generations. These aforementioned values can create a situation wherein both
generation can express themselves freely without worrying that pure intentions may be twisted due to
generation gap. Fostering these values proves that a meaninful communication can happen even with
different mediums and styles.
