II. BASIC RULES AND REGULATION


Objectives of the game
There are two teams with five players each. The goal of the game is to score points by shooting
the ball into the opponent's hoop. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Court Layout and Equipment


FULL COURT - used for a complete game.
Length: 28 meters (91.9 feet) Width: 15 meters (49.2
feet)

HALF COURT - typically used for practice or certain


game situations.
Length: 14 meters (45.5 feet) Width: 15 meters (49.2
feet)

PAINT AREA (KEY) - rectangular area near the hoop, where players are not allowed to stand for
too long because players can get a 3-second violation. 4.9 meters (16.08 feet) wide

FREE-THROW LINE - The line from which players shoot free throws. 5.8
meters (19 feet) from the basket

THREE-POINT LINE - 6.75 meters (22.15 feet) from the basket at the
top, curving toward 6.6 meters (21.65 feet) at the corners

BASKET HEIGHT - 3.05 meters (10 feet) from the floor to the rim

BACKBOARD - The flat surface behind the hoop that helps players aim and
rebounds missed shots. 1.8 meters (5.91 feet) wide by 1.05 meters (3.44
feet) high

BASKETBALL
FIBA - circumference of around 75 cm (29.5 inches)
NBA - circumference of around 78 cm (30.7 inches)

BASIC RULES OF PLAY

STARTING PLAY: TIP-OFF – This is how the game begins, also called a jump ball. Two players,
one from each team, jump to grab the ball tossed by the referee. The team that gets the ball starts
their offense.

TRAVELING – This happens when a player holding the ball takes more than two steps without
dribbling. This is called traveling, and the ball possession goes to the other team.

DOUBLE-DRIBBLING – This occurs when a player dribbles the ball again after stopping. This is
a double dribble violation, and the ball possession goes to the other team.

PERSONAL FOUL – This is when a player makes illegal contact, like punching, holding, or
pushing an opponent while playing. This is the most common type of foul in basketball.
