Forms of electromagnetic and the
Em Spectrum
Electromagnetic [EM] waves are
waves composed of oscillating
electric and magnetic fields that
move through space at the speed of
light { in a vacuum , approximately
300,000 km/s }. These waves are
generated by charged particles
In motion , and they propagate
without needing a physical medium,
meaning they can travel through the
vacuum of space.
The wide range of electromagnetic
waves is categorized into different
forms, depending on their frequency
and wavelength.
Electromagnetic spectrum- is a
continuous range of all possible
frequencies of electromagnetic
radiation.
The electromagnetic spectrum civers
a broad range of wave behaviors and
energy levels.
1. RADIO WAVES
2. MICROWAVES
3. INFRARED RADIATION
4. VISIBLE LIGHT
5. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION
6. X-RAYS
7. GAMMA RAYS
Ask question to the students;
1. What are the uses of radio
waves?
2. What type of electromagnetic
F. GENERALIZATION radiation has the longest
wavelength? Shortest
3. What type of radiation id used
to see inside the body?
4. What wavelength is used to
see molecules?
G. APPLICATION
{ 7 minutes}
“ACTIVITY”
Direction: Below are the real life
scenario, identify the type of
electromagnetic wave being used in
each case, and explain how its
properties make it suitable for that
application.
Group 1 scenario:
A radio station transmits music
across the city using a broadcasting
tower. People in their cars and
homes tune in to listen to their
favorite songs.
Question; What type of EM being
used for this communication, and
why is it effective for long distance
transmission?
Group 2 scenario
A doctor examines a broken
bine using a machine that can see
through the body and display
images of the skeleton
Question; what type pf EM wave
being used here? What properties of
this wave allow it to penetrate human
tissue but not bone.
Group 3 scenario
A person uses a small device to
control their tv from across the room
by pressing the buttons on the
remote control.
Question: what type of EM wave is
being used in the remote control, and
what allows it to control the device
without needing the direct contact.
H. ASSESSMENT
I. ASSIGNMENT
On 1 whole sheet of paper. Choose
two technology that use different
form of electromagnetic waves [e.g.
radio waves, microwaves, infrared,
etc.}
For each technology, describe how it
works, identify the type of
electromagnetic wave used, and
explain why that specific type of EM
wave is ideal for the technology.

J. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson the students
should be able to:
▪discuss the dangers of high- level
exposure to radiation
▪ value the sources of radiation and
their effects to human body
▪ create a concept map that
summarizes the benefits and hazards
of EM radiation.

Direction; unscramble the letters
and find the correct word.
Group 1
DARHAZ
N. ANALYSIS
{2 minutes}
After the activity ask the following
question to the students:
1, What do the letters imply?
2 How don you feel feel after you
are exposed to your devices for too
long?
D. ABSTRACTION

RISK and HAZARDS of EM
SPECTRUM
Electromagnetic spectrum-it is the
energy that produce the nuclear
reaction at the core of the sun.
Radiation in general can be defined
as the process of emitting energy by
any of these two basics;
1, PARTICLES such as in the case of
high-energy protons, neutrons,
electrons, atoms, and ions
2, WAVES either light or sound
Ionizing radiation is measured in
units it’s called MILLIREMS.
IONIZING RADIATION
An especially damaging form of
radiation, which can create
electrically charged ions in the
material strikes.
The most significant forms if
ionizing radiation are;
1. X-rays
2. Gamma rays
3. Alpha particles
4. Beta particles
5. Cosmic radiation
6. Neutrons
ATOMIC SOURCES OF
RADIAITION
Radiation id created by changes in
the state of atom.
Gamma rays are produced when the
of the nucleus atom changes state.
MEASURING RADIATION
While human cannot see ionizing
radiation or directly feel whether an
item is radioactive, they can use a
variety of instruments that detect and
measure radiation levels accurately.
SOURCES OF IONIZING RADIATION
On the surface of the earth, there
are several natural sources of
ionizing radiation.
EFFECTS OF RADIAITON IN
HUMANS
Radiations affect humans in two
ways;
Stochastics effects-which are
associated with long term, low-level
exposure to radiation
Non-stochastic effects- which appear
In cases of exposure to high levels of
radiation and become more severe
as the exposure increases.
E. GENERALIZATION
Ask question to the students;
1. What is a common example of
radiation in which all of us are
familiar?
2. What are the sources of man-
made radiation that people can
be exposed and;
3. How do you think will be the
health effects caused by
different doses of ionizing
radiation?
4. In your own understanding
what is the most effective
ways to protect against
radiation?
O. APPLICATION
{ 7 minutes}
“ACTIVITY”
Direction: Students will complete the
table below by choosing what
matches to the sources of radiation
with its use and its effect on living
things.
Sources of radiation Effects to
human
body

c radiation
2. Atomic sources
of radiation
