COMPARISON OF VACUUM ASSISTED DRESSING ( NPWT) AND
CONVENTIONAL DRESSING IN THE MANAGEMENT OF COMPLICATED SKIN
AND SOFT TISSUE INFECTIONS(SSTIs)- A RANDOMISED CONTROL STUDY
Dr Ashish Kumar Rana, Dr P.S. Sarangi, Dr Safwan Faisal
AIM:
To compare Vacuum assisted dressing and Conventional moist dressings in the Management
of complicated skin and soft tissue infections.
OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the rate of granulation tissue formation in percentage of ulcer surface area, to
compare the number of days required for the wound to be prepared for further intervention,
and the duration of hospital stay.
METHODS:
All patients Randomized using a block Randomization protocol and divided into two groups,
group A and group B representing patients received NPWT and conventional saline soaked
dressing respectively with 25 in each group that is total sample size is 50. The progress of the
wound assessed weekly and compared the rate of granulation tissue formation in percentage
of ulcer surface area. Duration of hospital stay have been calculated from the date of
admission to the date of discharge/date of transfer after either wound healing/after the wound
was prepared for further intervention.
RESUTLS:
In our study, at three-week,92% of those in group A promised granulation tissue appearance
as compared to 81% in the group B. At fifth week, the rate of granulation tissue in percentage
of ulcer surface area in the group A was 94 % and 87% in the group B. In our study at the end
of third week, 100% of wound in group A and 56% in group B was healed/prepared for
intervention. The mean duration of hospital stay in group A was 17.92 days as compared to
29.84days in group B.
CONCULSION:
NPWT has been proven effective in better wound healing based on formation of rapid
granulation tissue and less number of hospital stay.
