A MESSAGE FROM BRIANNE
You, my friend, are something special.
With the exercises outlined in this thought starter guide, you’ll
finally be able to define all of your passions and hone in on your
niche so you can articulate who you are and what you do.
To get the most out of these exercises, don’t hold back. List
anything and everything that comes to mind. Something that you
may think is completely silly or unimportant may actually end up
being what makes you stand out. Pick and choose which
exercises you want to do, or do all eight!
Embrace your quirks, let your mind wander, and put it all on
paper. I recommend printing out this workbook and handwriting
all of your thoughts and ideas.
By the time you’re finished, you’ll have a clearer understanding of
how you can turn your passions into a thriving brand that is
uniquely you.
Let’s get started!

FIND YOUR NICHE
EXERCISE 1: THROW IT BACK
You know I love a good throwback! It’s time to think like a kid again.
In the section below, list some things you remember being curious about and
loving to do when you were younger. What were your hobbies? What types of
books did you read? What subjects interested you? Don’t lose sight of those
passions — your childhood dreams may still be alive and well!

EXERCISE 2: MINDFUL SCROLLING
If you’re on Instagram, it turns out that the Explore tab is a beautiful curation of
all the things you love! Hop on your account and look for trends. What types of
photos and videos consistently appear? Is it content showing jewelry, tropical
destinations, shoes, healthy recipes, home decor? Everything you love is already
collected for you right under your nose!
What’s on your Explore tab? Describe some of the trends in your grid.

When I was a kid, I always said I wanted to be
My friends usually send me articles about

If I had a day off from work and could do anything I wanted, I would

EXERCISE 3: ME & MEDIA
You can learn a lot about what you love when you consider the types of content
you often read and consume. For example, if you’re obsessed with reading your
horoscope, or can’t get enough of Fixer Upper, then maybe you should be
creating content about astrology or home renovation ideas. The important thing
is to have FUN!
What are your favorite books usually about?
What are your go-to Netflix shows?
What are some of the articles saved in your browser bookmarks about?
Where do you get your news?
What trends do you notice about the content you like to watch and read?
What is the next book on your reading list?

EXERCISE 5: BRANDS I ADMIRE
Take a minute to research and list other personal brands you admire — from
bloggers and podcasters, to designers, musicians, authors, etc. These can be
macro celebrities (I love Reese Witherspoon’s brand!) or smaller influencers you
think make amazing content.

EXERCISE 6: PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Okay, by now, you should have a clearer understanding of some topics you think
would define your niche. Based on these exercises, what stands out to you most?
Write down everything you’re feeling about this assessment at this point:
The topic I think I’d like to focus on most is:
A close second would be:
Now ask yourself: Is there a way you can combine these two passions?
For example, if you love real estate and graphic design, you can create a platform
for realtors who need help designing collateral to promote their listings. Or if
you’re a marketing major hoping to land a job in the beauty industry one day, you
can write and analyze beauty companies’ marketing campaigns.
Write down a potential idea of how you could combine your passions.

EXERCISE 7: BEING DIFFERENT
One of the key aspects of defining a niche is to have your own unique angle on
things. What will differentiate you from all the other fashion bloggers out there?
Or the personal trainers of the world?
As Elizabeth Gilbert says in Big Magic, while you may be thinking your niche has
been done before, it hasn’t been done by YOU. You will always bring a unique
flair and voice to the content, no matter what.
Here are some examples of how to apply a unique angle to your niche:
NICHE EXAMPLE UNIQUE ANGLE
1 Fashion Focused on athleisure looks
2 Yoga For beginners w/ no flexibility
3 Weddings Under $10,000 / on a budget
4 Nutrition For those with food allergies
5 Social Media Specializing in video content tips
6 Public Relations Advice for interns & entry level
7 Parenting Managing screen-time and tech
8 Baseball Stadium tours and travel
9 Make-up Reviews of knock-offs / drugstore
10 Organization Digital filekeeping and hacks

EXERCISE 8: YOUR VOICE & TONE
Your brand voice in itself is a great way to differentiate when communicating
about a topic. It’s what makes you uniquely you!

Circle three to five words to describe how you'd like to sound.
Playful Serious Caring Witty

Enthusiastic Edgy Passionate Frank
Nostalgic Matter-of-fact Professional Dry
Sarcastic Authoritative Provocative Romantic
