SMART Goal Assignment
1. Reflect on your life since transitioning from a high school student to college. Please write down
three observations about yourself as a College student.
a. Prompts to help you think: How have you changed since you have become a college
student? Have you become a better student then you were in high school? Have your
study habits changed? Are you able to prioritize social life, student life, work life, and
other priorities? Has your diet/health changed? Have you picked up new habits?
I have become a much better student since I left high school. The reason is that I work better under
pressure and my high school is very chill and I spent most time playing. College is completely different
that I have to put more effort into studying and have almost no time doing anything else. I also
learned many new effective study methods and developed new habits like reading, and taking notes
before classes. I used to love hanging out with friends, but now I prioritize studying than other things. I
am busy, but I am trying to keep my healthy lifestyle, not to develop any negative changes in diets. I
also found new habits like walking more often and going to the gym.
2. Think about your typical week as a college student, estimate how many hours you spend in the
following areas:
a. Self- Care
2 hours
b. Studying
8 hours
c. Time with family/friends
5 hours
d. Work
Not working
e. Others: none (Please Specify)
3. Write down three things you would like to improve about yourself in your personal life or as a
college student.
I would like to improve the following:
Fitness, language skills, experience
4. Given your reflection of the last year, as well as the observations you have listed about yourself,
please come up with one SMART goal that you would like to meet by the end of the semester.
My one SMART goal is to learn Mandarin because it is essential for my knowledge and job application as an International Business
student.
Specific Learn Mandarin to complete HSK3- a level 3 certificate for Mandarin.
Measurable I am going to learn 2 chapters of Mandarin a day, and I have to complete 3 textbooks and 3 student
books, which will take around 2 months. Then take the HSK3 exam and get a good score for it.
Attainable I have a lot of assignments for school so 2 chapters a day should be possible, extra exercise for
writing and listening, and review by the end of the week. After 2 months, exam can be taken.
Realistic It is realistic and worthwhile based on the amount of work distributed for each day, and the deadline
for the goal to be completed.
Timely The goal should be completed in 2 months and some days more, so I should be able to take the exam
in the mid of December (December 15th/ 16th).
