Homework 4 - Solution

The document is a homework solution for EEC510/MCE545/445, detailing answers to problems involving simultaneous linear equations, vector norms, and eigenvalues. It includes conditions for the existence of solutions based on the parameter 'a', the minimum norm solution for a given matrix, and the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a specified matrix. Additionally, it outlines Matlab problems related to verifying solutions and analyzing an electronic circuit's output voltage based on input voltages.

EEC510/MCE545/445: Homework 4 Solution

Due on Oct. 24, 2022

I. Written assignment.
1. Three simultaneous linear equations are given below. Please answer the following three
questions.
a. For what values of 𝑎 do the following three equations have no solutions?
b. For what values of 𝑎 do the following three equations have a unique solution? What is
the solution?
c. For what values of 𝑎 do the following three equations have infinitely many solutions?
What are they?
𝑥+𝑦−𝑧 =2
𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 3
(𝑎 − 5)𝑧 = 0
1 1 −1 𝑥 2
a. 1 2 1 𝑦 = 3
0 0 𝑎−5 𝑧 0
1 1 −1 2 1 1 −1 2
𝑊= 1 2 1 3 → 0 1 2 1
0 0 𝑎−5 0 0 0 𝑎−5 0
No matter what 𝑎 is, the equations always have solutions.

b. As 𝑎 ≠ 5, there is a unique solution.

𝑥 1
The solution is: 𝑦 = 1
𝑧 0
c. As a=5, there are infinite solutions.
𝑥 1 + 3𝛼
The solution is: 𝑦 = 1 − 2𝛼 , where 𝛼 is an arbitrary real number.
𝑧 𝛼

2. The norm of vector 𝑋 in the following equation represents energy loss in a physical
system. What is the minimum norm solution 𝑋 in the equation?
1 1 0 1
𝑋=
0 0 1 4
Solution:
0.5
𝑋 = 𝐴 (𝐴𝐴 ) 𝑌 = 0.5

3. Find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the following matrix by hand.

1 1
𝐴=
0 3

|𝜆𝐼 − 𝐴| = 𝜆 − 1 −1
= 𝜆 − 4𝜆 + 3 = 0
0 𝜆−3
𝜆 = 1, 𝜆 = 3
As 𝜆 = 1
(𝐴 − 𝜆 𝐼)𝑋 = 0
(𝐴 − 𝐼)𝑋 = 0

0 1
𝑋 =0
0 2

𝑋 =

As 𝜆 = 3
(𝐴 − 𝜆 𝐼)𝑋 = 0
(𝐴 − 3𝐼)𝑋 = 0

−2 1
𝑋 =0

𝑀 𝐴𝑀 =
0 3

II. Matlab Problems

1. Verify your answer to problem 3 in Written Assignments using Matlab.

2. A student in the laboratory measures an electronic circuit and determines that,
theoretically, the observed output voltage Vout should be a linear combination of two
input voltages, vx and vy. Specifically, 𝑉 = 𝑔 𝑣 + 𝑔 𝑣 , where 𝑔 and 𝑔 are to be
determined.
The data that the student records are shown in the following table.
𝑣 0 2 1 1 3 2 3
𝑣 1 0 1 2 2 3 4
𝑉 -1.1 -3.7 -2.9 -4.1 -8.2 -6.9 -10.1

a. Formulate the problem by hand and use Matlab to find the unknown constants g1 and g2 in
the following equation.
𝑖 =𝑔 𝑣 +𝑔 𝑣
b. Substitute the two gains that you got from step a into the equation above to find the calculated
iout.
c. (For EEC510 and MCE545 students only) Use Matlab to plot a 3D graph based on the data in
the table above and calculated Vout. In the 3D graph, make two axes represent vx and vy
respectively, and one axis represent iout. The graph is expected to show that the calculated Vout
is close to measured Vout.
