📕 Want to master not only idea generation but the whole content
creation process & grow on social media?
Take a look at my 150-page book on Dominating Instagram
Without further ado, let’s dive into the guide 👇
1️⃣The truth about content creation
The harsh truth about content creation is:
”Content is as hard as you make it to be”
Most people struggle with content not because they lack the technical
capabilities
(Tools nowadays make it so easy to get basic content done)
But because they don't understand the foundations of content creation
When I started 1 post took me 8+ hours (and it wasn’t even good)
Now, I make 110+ posts per month (and the quality is way higher)
But the best part is, I can do it sustainably (I’ve been posting daily for 5+ years)
And that’s all because I realized that content is like a Puzzle - let me explain:
Each post is made of several puzzle pieces:
Instead of focusing on the whole picture from the start
You have to break your posts into their building blocks
And focus on each of these building blocks individually
Let’s explore the building blocks of each post
2️⃣Master the content creation puzzle
1️⃣ Idea Generation
A great post is born from a great idea
I won’t dive too deep into this piece as I have a whole guide on it
But you have to understand that an idea is made of 2 elements:
1️⃣ Hook + 2️⃣ Format
1️⃣ The hook of your posts is your headline - it’s what makes people curious to
consume your content
2️⃣ The format of your post is your angle - how you decide to present the
information you have
2️⃣ Copywriting
It impacts every step of the process….
From your hooks through your captions and the content inside your posts
It’s the skill of translating what's within your mind into words
And the thing is - everyone can write, but not everyone can write well
But what is good writing in the first place?
In the context of social media, I believe good writing follows the mini-skirt rule:
”Long enough so it covers everything but short enough to keep things interesting”
Here’s an example of this concept in practice:
3️⃣ Execution
Depending on the format - the executional requirements vary
Creating a great diagram or carousel requires a very different skillset from
recording and editing videos
But the foundational rule here is understanding that:
Execution should supplement the other elements of the process not take away
from them
Let me explain…
A lot of times people try to design the most beautiful carousels or edit the best
videos
And let me tell you - unless you are a designer or a video editor - you are wasting
your time
You are not in the business of selling design or video services
You are in the business of selling information, transformations
Yes, visuals matter - but you should prioritise Clarity over Cleverness
Keep the visuals simple, and use them as a tool to enhance your message
4️⃣ Posting Optimisation
I will be honest - this is the biggest beginner trap of them all
Gurus are selling you the concept that:
• You just have to know your perfect posting time
• You just need to find the right hashtags
• You just need to use a trending audio
Yes, these things matter, but they won’t make or break your posts
Here I love the analogy:
Imagine you sprinkle chocolate on charcoal and try to eat it - how would it taste?
Like charcoal.
It’s the same with the posting optimisation - platforms are smart enough to
understand which posts are charcoal even with all the chocolate sprinkled on them
So yes, understand hashtags, posting times, trending audios - but don’t overthink
or obsess over them
If you want to obsess over something, the next element is the one that will pay a
lot more dividends:
5️⃣ Analysis & Adaptation
Content quality is subjective. A great post in your eyes may be garbage in mine.
What isn't subjective is data.
Understanding which metrics to track, how to track them and how to draw
conclusions from them is one of the most underrated skills for content creators
Different platforms and formats have slightly different key performance indicators
(KPIs)
For example, Instagram Saves are somewhat important (they were way more
important back in the day)
But they don’t mean anything on LinkedIn - you can’t even track them as a
creator
What doesn’t change is the fact that all platforms want 1 thing…
Attention. They all want to keep the attention of their users for as long as
possible
Because the more attention they have, the more attention they can sell (to
advertisers) and the more money they can make
Your goal as a creator is to understand which posts of yours have brought and
kept the most attention and find ways to replicate them
3️⃣Content Creation Checklists
Now that we’ve understood the Content Creation Puzzle - let’s dive more
practically into the checklist for each of the elements that make up a post:
1️⃣ Idea Generation Checklist:
Does it reflect a pain point/benefit your audience wants?
Does it serve your goal as a creator?
No technical words/jargon
Is it short and simple, so even a cold audience will get it?
Does it make you want to consume the rest of the post?
Does it accurately describe the value of the rest of the post?
If it uses a question, is the answer not obvious?
Does the language used in the hook resonate with your tone of voice?
2️⃣ Copywriting Checklist:
People don’t read. They scan. Internalise this
Make it easy for people to get the gist only by scanning headlines
Avoid jargon, especially early on in the post
Use metaphors from real-life
Write your draft. Edit 24 hours later. Don’t publish immediately
Make the benefit of reading your copy crystal clear
Rhyme long and short sentences to make it enjoyable
Avoid sentences with more than 7-9 words
Use Hemingway Editor for help with simplifying sentences/words
3️⃣ Design Execution Checklist:
Clarity > Cleverness - keep the design clean & clear
Spend 80% of your time on the cover (of a carousel)
Guide the eye with design elements such as arrows
Always left-align text longer than 2 lines
Use visual hierarchy to make your CTA’s pop
Use the rule of 3’s - no more than 3 colors, fonts on your page
3️⃣ Video Recording Checklist:
Clean your camera lens before recording
Record in a bright environment
Start with action/movement for pattern interruption
Give 110% of your usual energy when recording
For long scripts, try a Teleprompter
Stay close enough to fill the frame; far away to show your hand movement
Batch record videos and only change outfits
3️⃣ Video Editing Checklist:
Insert action/transitions every 2-3 seconds
Avoid heavy filters (they ruin quality)
Remove empty spaces between sentences
Don’t overedit. It may look like an ad. Keep the edits native to the platform
(unless retention editing)
Show your Reels to friends/family - ask them where you lose their attention
and edit that part out
Integrate your brand identity for a consistent look between video and static
content
Make sure the beginning of the video is intense so it stops the scroll
Review your Retention data and cut-out drops when you repurpose video
Double-check the video before publishing - does it have mistakes, and how
does it look when Previewed on Instagram
4️⃣ Posting Checklist (Instagram Specific):
Is the hook in the caption visible (not cut off by “…more”)
Have you used keywords in the creative/captions
Have you provided context/CTA in the caption
Have you used 3-5 relevant to the post caption
Do you have time to engage for at least 15 minutes before/after posting
Have you picked up to 3 tags for your Reels?
Have you chosen a proper cover for your Reel?
Have you re-read your caption/post before publishing?
Have you previewed your Reel to make sure text/visuals aren’t cut?
5️⃣ Analytics Checklist (Instagram Specific):
Have 24 hours from the post publishing passed before analysing?
Has your post gotten a good reach:like ratio? (1:10 - 1000 reach - 100 likes)
Has your post been pushed to non-followers? (20% normal - 50% great -
80% perfect)
If educational, has your post gotten a good like:save ratio? (1:1 - 100 likes -
100 saves)
If inspirational, has your post gotten a good like:share ratio? (10:1 - 100 likes -
10 shares)
If video, is the average watch time good? (100% for videos under 15 seconds
- 60% for videos under 40 seconds - 40% for videos over 40 seconds)
