Chapter No 4
Conceptual / Theoretical Background
/ Literature Review

33 | P a g e
Conceptual/Theoretical Background:

Conversational AI is a type of artificial intelligence that allows consumers to have human-like interactions
with a computer program. These applications are most commonly used in customer service and can be found
on websites, social media, and online shops as chatbots or virtual assistants. Unlike the more constrained
interactions that occur when a person converses with a conventional chatbot, a conversational AI chatbot can
address frequently asked questions, fix problems, and even make small talk.

To understand, respond, and learn from every interaction, conversational AI combines a variety of technologies,
including Machine Learning (ML), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Natural Language Processing (NLP),
and Advanced Dialog Management.

The first thing the application does is receive data from the user, either in the form of written or spoken
language. ASR, also referred to as voice recognition, is the technology that understands spoken input and
converts it into text so that it can be read by a computer.

The program then has to interpret what the text says. To determine the text’s intended message, it makes use of
Natural Language Understanding (NLU), a component of Natural Language Processing (NLP).

The response is then created by the application based on its analysis of the text’s intent via dialog management.
Dialog management coordinates the responses and uses Natural Language Generation (NLG) to transform them
into human-understandable language.

The final element is responsible for teaching and enhancing the application over time. This is referred to as
machine learning or reinforcement learning, where the program makes improvements and gains knowledge from
each interaction to respond more effectively in the future.

While conversing with computers, we try to mimic human interaction. Trying to understand as to how
computers are scripted to speak – that only leads to frustration. Instead, it would have been easy if computers
could communicate like us. The technology that makes it possible is conversational AI. Since the gap between
computer language and human is bridged, easy and natural communication between the two is possible.
Conversational AI is a set of technologies that recognizes human language. Different languages are also
34 | P a g e
deciphered, comprehended and determines the right response. It also mimics human conversation. Various
businesses are quickly waking up to the requirement for chatbots and other automated software. From
automating simple communications and customer service, to decrease various costs and giving a platform for
conversational dealings, customers can be satisfied by many methods which chatbots provide. Chatbots allow
day and night customer service, constantly interacting with multiple users and providing them answers to their
queries. People do not like to wait for their responses. They want immediate and quick response from the
company and this can only be achieved through a conversational AI. If the customer does not obtain an
immediate response it may lead to forsaking the online purchase. The need for faster customer service has
increased. Major brands have started to implement conversational AI to overcome this need. Chatbot are divided
into two categories. Rule-based chatbot and a smart machine learning based chatbot. In the rulebased approach
the programmer will code the rules for the system. In the machine learning method, large amount of steaming
info is required to train the algorithm on its own. Programmers, hence need to properly define the parameters of
machine learning. Many voice assistants enable users to communicate with their voice, which have been
developed by famous like Google, Apple and Amazon, however there are a few security risks. Hence it is
necessary to make sure proper security measures are taken. An alternate system is required to truly be effective
and make business processes automated. The entire business process can be automated by an advance dialogue
system known as AI chatbot application system. Thus, natural language processing (NLP), deep neural networks
(DRN) must be included in the chatbot application, so that the customers query can be easily understood. In
service-based industry, chatbot can be used to satisfy customers query, answer basic questions which does not
require human expertise and can also make buying easy for the customer. Data can be analysed more accurately
by an AI chatbot than humans. It accurately predicts the answer to the queries, thereby satisfying the customer
and also to provide ease of use and proper privacy.

I. REVIEW ON CHAT INTERFACE: This unit is the front end of the system. It is
responsible for collecting the user queries from the user which are the input to the system. It
is also responsible for displaying the system generated results to the user. Therefore, it can be
said that the Conversational AI is the face of the system through which the entire
communication takes place. The query that user is passed on to the backend which acts as a
delivering system for the message between the front-end and the Machine Learning back-end.
This interface can be accessed either as a website or as a smart phone app. The requirements

35 | P a g e
of the user decide the user interface. For building apps on the smartphone, it will require to
use android for android phones or Swift for iOS. In this case, the android will program only
the interfacing platform and a server on which the system will be deployed, will perform the
complete backend processing of the system. For making a website, either Java or Python web
frameworks can be used. Java provides Spring and Struts as the latest and most advanced web
frameworks. Similarly, for building a website, usage of Django and Flask Framework is
allowed by python. The selection criteria of programming language is dependent upon system
functionalities that are intended to provide, user requirements, algorithm that the system uses,
etc. It becomes easy to develop a system by developers by choosing an appropriate
programming language, which provides high accuracy and minimum complexity with
maximum functionality.
II. REVIEW ON NLU ENGINE: The subpart of NLP (Natural Language Processing) is NLU
(Natural Language Understanding). The conversational language or the natural language
spoken by the user can be understood by the system which is enabled by NLU. Day to day
language spoken by humans is not accurate to formal language. It focuses less on vocabulary
and the grammar. Hence, to understand the intent of the sentence becomes difficult for a
system. The user gives input in text format which is unstructured, therefore cannot be
understood by the system directly. Structured format inputs are only understood. Conversion
of the user’s unstructured text to structured text is done by NLU techniques. Important text
and word patterns are extracted from user text. Homophones, swapped words,
mispronunciation, slang words, shortened form of words (like “it’s” for “it is”) are easily
understood by Humans. Words which are not used in formal vocabulary exist in regular
conversion. These twerks are identified by the system with the help of NLU techniques. This
makes the user feel that the conversation is taking place between two humans and not
between a human and a bot. Meaning of the user sentences is not directly understood by NLU
systems. It involves a sequence of processes to derive the actual sentence’s intent. To
understand a complete sentence, the NLU system needs to understand each word of that
sentence. It means that the initial task is the segmentation of the individual words from
sentences. Next, to understand the word, the system needs to understand the grammar of the
sentence. This can be done by knowing the parts of speech of each word in that sentence. The
use of POS (Parts-Of-Speech) comes here. In order to know the dependency among the

36 | P a g e
words, all of the words are parsed after knowing the grammatical weightage. To extract the
words with the highest dependency is a step which is very important. One can know the intent
of the system from this. The exact sentence that the user has sent is not possible to be
contained by the knowledge base. The sentence may have the same intent but with different
words used in it. Sentence matching and synonym determination are required to match
sentences which are synonymic.
III. WORD SEGMENTATION REVIEW: Tokenization is another word for Segmentation.
Segmentation is when we split text into something meaningful and small. The splitting can be
into paragraphs, sentences, clauses, phrases, words or letters. Letters are the smallest units in
a sentence. Getting individual words from sentences which are separated by spaces is word
segmentation. Tokens are the sentence’s tokenized units. Punctuation marks are split into
independent units and sentences into words by the tokenizers. Space type is the most
commonly used tokenizer. Sentences are split into words at blank spaces by space type token.
In some cases, words may lose their meaning. So, tokenizers need to take care of it as well.
Some examples are numbers in decimal format, dates, etc.
IV. V. NLG ENGINE REVIEW: NLU’s reverse task is NLG. System produced results are converted
into natural language using NLG. The user can easily understand these conversions. It can also be said
as the method of generating text or speech from system generated patterns. The system gives the
output in a structured form so that it is less complex and can be easily processed by the system. NLG
portrays comprehensible uncomplicated system which is a storage of knowledge in the representation
of natural or conversational language. A single sentence can be told in multiple ways. A sentence can
be said in two voices which are active or passive voice. Sentences can also hold the same meaning but
use different words, with the help of synonyms. Hence, NLG unit needs to calculate interpretation of
sentences in all possibilities, while response is provided to the user. The interpretation should also be
of highest efficiency. A number of different steps are executed to generate a sentence by the NLG
engine. Ascertaining the contents is the first step. This includes choosing which response should be
given to the user. The task is to select appropriate choice of words that will be a part of the sentence.
Based on its POS Tag, position of words in a sentence are dealt by NLG engine. POS is Placement Of
nouns, verbs, adjectives, preposition, etc. In all, NLG organises the entire sentence which includes
both selection of words and their placement in the sentence. The next step would be choosing the
sentence. Like we have expressed before, there are quite a number of ways which can be used to say
the same thing, so this step is involved which choosing the best or most appropriate of all sentences
for that particular situation. The multiple sentences which are being reviewed from the knowledge
37 | P a g e
base are in the abstract form and not entirely complete. They have to grammatically correct and hence
they need to be perfected. This section is tasked with checking the accuracy of semantics of sentences
according to the grammar rules of the system. Last is the morphology check. In this, the checking of
the correctness of sentence generated from previous step is done. This step confirms the accuracy of
the sentence
V. HOW DOES CONVERSATIONAL AI WORK? How does a chatbot get from an asked
question to an appropriate response? There are technologies that makes conversational AI possible.
Conversational AI uses natural language processing (NLP) and additional AI algorithms to
comprehend and engage in contextual dialogue. First, the customer’s intent or what the customer is
trying to say must be understood by the AI. Regardless of how words are stated, user’s words are
deciphered using natural language processing (NLU). With sophisticated NLU, the AI will be able to
understand the user's intent even among grammatical mistakes, shortcuts, and idiosyncrasies, and
remember context from one statement to the next, comprehending what is being said throughout the
conversation. This capability is not as simple as recognizing a keyword or a phrase. There is no
scripted canned response answer for the keyword. Next, the AI uses machine learning to understand
the intent of the user and gives an appropriate response. The AI understands which intents and
responses are most appropriate with the help of human guiding its knowledge and by answering user’s
questions repeatedly. This way it enhances its knowledge and gives much better answers. Finally, AI
generates a response which the user can read and understand properly using natural language
generation.

Interaction with Conversational AI

Technical Pipeline

39 | P a g e
Conversational AI Steps: Integrating NLP, Speech Recognition, and Text-to-Speech: Building a Robust
Conversational AI. The heart of any successful conversational AI project lies in the seamless integration of
three fundamental technologies: Natural Language Processing (NLP), Speech Recognition, and Text-to-
Speech. This orchestrated interplay provides the framework for intelligent communication and interaction.

1. Input Processing:

 Speech Recognition: Choose a suitable API or toolkit like Google Speech-to-Text or DeepSpeech2 to
convert spoken words into text. Speech recognition or voice recognition is a complex process that
involves audio accuracy over several steps and data or language solutions.

 Recognizing the words, models and content in the user’s speech or audio. This business accuracy step
requires training the model to identify each word in your vocabulary or audio cloud.

 Converting those audios and language into text. This step involves converting recognized audios into
letters or numbers (called phonemes) so that other parts of the AI software solutions system can process
those models.

 Determining what was said. Next, AI looks at which content and words were spoken most often and
how frequently they were used together to determine their meaning (this process is known as
“predictive modelling”).

 Parsing out commands from the rest of your speech or audio content (also known as disambiguation).

 Text Preprocessing: Clean and analyze the input text through NLP techniques like tokenization,
stemming, lemmatization, and punctuation removal. This helps prepare the text for further processing.

40 | P a g e
2. Understanding and Responding:

 Natural Language Processing (NLP): NLP is the ability of a computer to understand human language
and respond in a way that is natural for humans. This involves understanding the meaning of words and
the structure of sentences, as well as being able to handle idiomatic expressions and slang.

 NLP is made possible by machine learning, which is used to train computers to understand language.
NLP algorithms use large data sets to learn how words are related to each other, and how they are used
in different contexts.

 Use NLU techniques like entity recognition, intent classification, and sentiment analysis to understand
the meaning and intent behind the user's input. This determines what the user wants or asks.

 Dialogue Management: Based on NLU's output, use a dialogue management system to determine the
appropriate response. This could involve retrieving information from a database, generating text, or
triggering specific actions.

NLP (NLU & NLG)

41 | P a g e
3. Output Generation:

 Text-to-Speech (TTS): The last stage of the conversational AI pipeline involves taking the text response
generated by the NLU stage and changing it to natural-sounding speech. This vocal clarity is achieved
using deep neural networks that produce human-like intonation and a clear articulation of words. Text-
to-speech (TTS) is a type of assistive technology that reads digital text aloud. It’s sometimes called
“read aloud” technology. TTS can take words on a computer or other digital device and convert them
into audio. Utilize a TTS tool like Amazon Polly or Google Cloud Text-to-Speech to convert generated
text into natural-sounding audio.

education, professions are not matched. Likewise, quantitative data methods can be used for outlier
detection that would be subsequently excluded in analysis.

Data Analysis
Data that is processed, organized and cleaned would be ready for the analysis. Various data analysis
techniques are available to understand, interpret, and derive conclusions based on the requirements. Data
Visualization may also be used to examine the data in graphical format, to obtain additional insight regarding

43 | P a g e
the messages within the data. Statistical Data Models such as Correlation, Regression Analysis can be used to
identify the relations among the data variables. These models that are descriptive of the data are helpful in
simplifying analysis and communicate results. The process might require additional Data Cleaning or
additional Data Collection, and hence these activities are iterative in nature .

Communication
The results of the data analysis are to be reported in a format as required by the users to support their
decisions and further action. The feedback from the users might result in additional analysis. The data analysts
can choose data visualization techniques, such as tables and charts, which help in communicating the message
clearly and efficiently to the users. The analysis tools provide facility to highlight the required information
with color codes and formatting in tables and charts.

and their responses would be treated confidentially. No identifying information was
linked to the survey data to ensure the anonymity of participants.

35
Knowledge of banks that 63% (641) respondents reported that they had heard of the
World Bank while 34% (339) reported they had not in contrast, only 13% (138) had
heard of the AIIB. World Bank awareness likely due to long-standing presence,
including in selected Indian States.

36
Project Approval of Hypothetical Development Project

After hearing about the project description, respondents were asked how much they
would approve of the project. Responses were recorded on a Likert scale and then
converted into a scale from -2 to
+2. Local government has highest approval (mean = 1.57). Approval drop is statistically
significant both when US and China locations mentioned (mean = 1.44 and 1.20
respectively)

37
Do people want their own government to take these loans?

Respondents were asked how much would they support the government for
accepting project financing for projects like these

High support for asking the World Bank for support statistically significant drop in
support, if government wants “China located” AIIB finance (mean = -0.02)

38
Trust in the Implementers

Respondents were asked how much they trust the implementers to achieve the aim of

the project Trust in the local government highest (mean = 1.042)

This aligns with the perception of locally funded projects as more accountable and

trustworthy Like in last slide, statistically significant drop in trust in “China located”

Information

In-person surveys in August-September 2023 of 2572 individuals based in four cities in

India in the person’s preferred language Hindi in Bhopal, Ludhiana, and Kolkata, Tamil
in Chennai, and English in all four These cities have different constellations of parties in
their local government, speak different languages, and differ in levels of prosperity We
examine the extent to which place-specific satisfaction with local government finance
varies

1.Data Analysis and Interpretations

1.1 Demographic Profile of Respondents

To understand the composition of the survey participants, we analyzed the

demographic information provided by the respondents. This included age, gender,
educational background, and geographic location.

1.2 Perceptions on Developmental Aid

The core of the survey focused on the opinions and perceptions of respondents
regarding developmental aid in India. We analyzed their responses to questions related
to the effectiveness of developmental aid, the areas that should receive aid, and their
overall attitudes towards foreign aid.

1.3 Factors Influencing Opinions

To gain deeper insights, we examined the factors that influence the opinions of Indian
voters on developmental aid. This included factors such as political affiliation, level of
education, and geographical location. We sought to understand whether these
variables had a significant impact on their views.

41
2.Findings

Oversampled are educated persons. Assumption that they would know more about the
Banks, and be more influential on funding questions, so wanted narrower confidence
intervals. Also sampled illiterate persons. Would not have been possible with an on-line
survey, and they constitute 25% of voters in national elections .For next version—
created a weighted sample that matches the underlying distribution of each city

How Demographic Profile affects Approval

In Ordinary Least Square, we take as covariates the demographic parameters of age,

city location, education level and voting behavior. Except for the World Bank when its
location is not revealed, the three other treatment groups show significant drop in
approval when covariates included. Higher education increases the approval of
project.

43
44
Even with covariates, Treatment 4 (“China located”) continues to remain significant, just as in t-test seen
before the city of Ludhiana shows a pronounced drop in trust

45
Perceptions on Developmental Aid
We asked the respondents why they chose the particular bank. A text analysis of why people want to
stick/leave their assigned Bank. The country has traditionally been a leader of the non-aligned movement,
and it has kept its distance from the United State. More recently, 65% of Indians have a favorable view of the
US, and two-thirds view China negatively (Pew 2023), so Clear variance in views of the two powers
