SILENCE IN THE LIBRARY
ABSTRACT:
In dictionaries the word “Library” has been defined as “a building or room containing a collection of
books”. It is a quiet place that takes a very important part in every school or university. Here students
expect to find an environment where they can concentratedly read and learn without any disturbances
of unwanted noise. Noise can often disrupts concentration. Most students at one time or another have
found themselves irritated by the uncontrolled noise. The irritation might have resulted in minor
annoyance that may hinder their work. In an effort to control this unwanted noise, architectural
acoustics solution are being considered from the very beginning of the planning stage. Helpful ratings
such as the Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) and Noise Criteria (NC) are being studied to achieve the
acoustic standards for libraries.

INTRODUCTION:
The library is considered as the core of every school or university’s intellectual activities. It is where all
students meet in search for additional knowledge which often times the four corners of the classrooms
cannot provide. With it’s books, magazines, periodicals, and news papers to fill their minds. The library
is intented for quiet study and is designated for quiet zone. It is expected to have a calm and tranquil
athmosphere. Yet sometimes it cannot be avoided that the library may face a number of issues
regarding acoustics. Particularly, the uncontrolled noise. According to the Noise Criteria (NC), The sound
level acceptable for libraries ranges approximately from 30-40dB. And it is always desirable to aim for
the normal sound level of 35dB for quiet library. These problems can be addressed by providing acoustic
treatments. A good library acoustic design should satisfy the ABCs of acoustics, which Absorbs, Blocks,
and Covers.
The University of Mindanao, Learning and Information Center has recently been awarded as the
university’s most progressive department of year 2016. It’s their 3rd consecutive year as the award
recipient. Many things have been developed with in the library. From it’s services to it’s facilities.
However, does the improved services and facilities of the library contibutes to its purpose of providing a
quiet place or does it only shows how progressive the library is. Therefore, this research is interested to
know about the architectural acoustic situation inside the library.
RESEARCH QUESTION:
METHODOLOGY:
An Android App called “Sound Meter” version 3.1.7 developed by the “Abc Apps” is used to measure the
environment noise in decibel values. The app also displays the decibel recorded by graph.
Measurements are done in two
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS:
From the gathered data of the android app “Sound Meter” version 3.1.7 inside the University of
Mindanao Learning and Information Center has shown that the library has exceeded _____from the
normal sound level of 35dB for quiet libraries. The recorded results show that the library creates a
minimum sound level of ____ and a maximum sound level of ___ having an average sound level of ____.
