Total Dimensions: Level: Beginner
Dowel Length: 42cm Time: Approx. 3h40m
Width (without the dowel): 38cm
Height: 55cm

Note about the Dimensions

The dimensions of the wall hanging will depend on the thickness of your
cords and type of materials. Also, small differences arise from the
different knotting style of each and every of us.

Materials
• 3mm Twisted Cotton Rope – 83.1m in total
• 3mm Single Strand Cotton Rope – 22.4m in total (for the fringes of
Layer 3)
Alternative for the 3mm Cotton Rope
You can also use Single Strand Cotton Rope or Twisted Cotton Rope for the whole
project. In this case you will need 105.5m in total.

• 1.5mm Twisted Cotton Rope, 70cm long (for the Gathering Knot of
Layer 2)
• Driftwood/Dowel, 42cm long (or longer)
• Scissors
• Measuring Tape
• Paper Tape – Optionally
Knots used
In this project we will use:
• Lark’s Head Knot
• Diagonal Double Half Hitch Knot
• Square Knot
• Gathering Knot

If you are not familiar with any knot, you will

find step by step photos in the second pdf
provided.

Also, you can watch this video for the Square

Knot
Let’s get started!
Layer 1: The center section

STEP 1: Cut 6 cords of 3mm Twisted Cotton Rope, 1.7m

long each
STEP 2: Fold the cords in half and mount them on your driftwood
using the Lark’s Head Knot.

Start in the middle of the dowel and mount 2 cords. Then mount 2
about 7cm to the left and 2 about 7cm to the right of the middle
cords.
STEP 3: Pattern
1st row: Tie one Square Knot with each group of ropes
2nd row: Leave 7cm free space and alternate with the previous
row

Ignore strands No 1 & No 2 as well as strands No 11 & No 12

Tie two square knots with the following strands: No 3, 4, 5, 6 &

No 7, 8, 9, 10
3rd row: Leave 7cm of free space and tie one single square
knot using cords: No 5, 6, 7, 8
Attaching the fringes on the left: Grab 28 strands of 3mm
Twisted Cotton Rope, 90cm long each, and divide them into
groups of four. Each group will consist of 7 strands.
Take the first 7 strands and hang them around cords No 3 &
4 on the free space located between the first two square
knots (SK) on the left, using Lark’s Head Knots. Place the
cords close to each other and tighten them firmly and nice!
Now grab the second group of 7 strands and mount them
around cords No 3 & 4 on the free space located between the
2nd and the 3rd square knot (SK), using Lark’s Head Knots.
Attaching the fringes on the right: Hang the third group of 7
strands around cords No 9 & 10 on the free space located
between the first two square knots on the right, using Lark’s Head
Knots.
Now grab the last group of 7 strands and mount them around
cords No 9 & 10 on the free space located between the 2nd
and the 3rd Square Knot (SK), using Lark’s Head Knots.

At this point our work should look like this

Rows of Double Half Hitch Knots (DHHK) - Left Side: For the
left side we will use strand No1 as the filler cord around which
all the other strings will be tied with Diagonal Double Half
Hitch Knots
While tying DDHK keep in mind:
1) While knotting keep the curving shape
2) Do not tie the two cords coming from the 2nd Square Knot
(SK). Just skip them and continue with the cords we
mounted with Lark’s Head Knots.
3) When you reach the 3rd Square Knot include the 2 left
cords coming from the 3rd SK.

side >>here<< using the password: AMELIA
Rows of Double Half Hitch Knots (DHHK) - Right Side: For the
right side we will use strand No12 (the last one) as the filler
cord around which all the other strings will be tied with
Diagonal Double Half Hitch Knots

While tying DDHK keep in mind:

1) While knotting keep the curving shape
2) Do not tie the two cords coming from the 2nd Square Knot
(SK). Just skip them and continue with the cords we
mounted with Lark’s Head Knots.

cords coming from the 3rd SK.

Layer 2: The Diamond Pattern
STEP 1: Cut 6 cords of 3mm Twisted Cotton Rope, 3.2m long
each
STEP 2: Fold the cords in half and mount them on your driftwood
using the Lark’s Head Knot. Mount 3 strands on each side of the
dowel.

IMPORTANT NOTE
- Don’t forget to renumber your cords after each and every step.
- Count only the ones that you have just mounted on the dowel (6
cords, 3 on each side)
STEP 3: Diamond Pattern
1) Hold cord 3 right downward and make Diagonal Double
Hitch Knots using cords 4-6
2) Hold cord 3 left downward and make Diagonal Double
Hitch Knots using cords 2-1
3) Hold cord 1 right downward and make Diagonal Double
Hitch Knots using cords 2-3.
4) Hold cord 6 left downward and make Diagonal Double
Hitch Knots using cords 5-4
5) Repeat 1, 2, 3, 4 until you have 7 diamonds

6) Do the same for the right side

STEP 4: Gathering Together
Once you have finished with both sides, grab the 70cm
long 1.5mm Twisted Cotton Rope and tie a gathering
knot including all the cords from both sides (diamond
layer)
Cut the excess cords
At this point our work should look like this
Layer 3: Alternating Square Knots
STEP 1: Cut 8 cords of 3mm Twisted Cotton Rope, 3.5m
each
STEP 2: Fold the cords in half and mount them on your driftwood
using the Lark’s Head Knot. Mount 4 strands on each side of the
dowel.

IMPORTANT NOTE
- Don’t forget to renumber your cords after each and every step.
- Count only the ones that you have just mounted on the dowel (8
cords, 4 on each side)
STEP 3: Pattern
1) Make 2 Square Knots with cords 1-4 & 5-8
2) Make a Square Knot with cords 3-6
3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have 31 rows of
Square Knots
Do the same on the right side:
4) Make 2 Square Knots with cords 9-12 & 13-16
5) Make a Square Knot with cords 11-14
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have 31 rows of
Square Knots
7) Join the two figures by making a Square Knot using strings 7-10
8) Make a Square Knot using strings 3-6
9) Make two Square Knots using strings 1-4 & 5-8
10) Make a Square Knot using strings 11-14
11) Make two Square Knots using strings 9-12 & 13-16

12) Make Square Knots using cords 3-6, 7-10, 11-14

13) Make two Square Knots using cords 5-8, 9-12
14) Make a Square Knot using cords 7-10
15) Hold cord No1 right downward and make Diagonal
Double Half Hitch Knots using cords 2-8
16) Hold cord No16 left downward and make Diagonal
Double Half Hitch Knots using cords 15-8
STEP 4: Fringes for Layer 3
1) Cut 64 cords of Single Strand Cotton Rope, 35cm each
2) Fold them in half and mount them on Layer 3 (Square
Knot Layer) using Lark’s Head Knots. Mount two cords in
each of the “gaps” on the external edges of Layer 3
FINISHING TOUCHES
HANDLING THE FRINGES
Cut the fringes of the Gathering Knot (Layer 2) at the same
height as the fringes of the front figures. You can choose to cut
your work at a straight line or in a “V” shape as I did. To do so,
you can use a tape to guide your hand while you are trimming
the fringes.
HOW TO HANG MY WORK
You can choose any way you prefer. My own favorite is to
hang my work using a 3mm Twisted Cotton Rope 50cm long,
mounting it in the middle of the dowel using a Lark’s Head
Knot and tying a simple Overhand Knot to secure the ends
