THE LITTLE CHEF
It was clear that Jamie was destined to become a chef from a very young age. When his mother put
a plate of food in front of him as a baby he would always mix it together as if he was trying to create
a new dish. He ate a lot too, and it is fair to say that he was not a thin child. When he wasn't eating
food he was thinking about food.
As Jamie grew older he became more and more interested in cooking food for himself. He was
always asking his mother and his teachers about techniques and recipes until eventually he knew
more about cooking than they did. His speciality was omelettes — he once made an omelette in one
minute! (It usually took him double that time though).
By the age of twelve Jamie was cooking at dinner parties for his parents and their friends, and
everyone thought that his food was delicious. He made all kinds of food, from Italian to Indian, from
beef to vegetarian, hot and cold, sweet and savoury, and everything was of the highest quality. "Just
you wait," the guests would say, "he'll be a famous chef when he's older".
When Jamie left school at eighteen years old, he went to study cooking at a specialist school.
It was wonderful for him — he was around other people who loved cooking as much as he did. After
he was finished as a student he got a job at a restaurant close to his home, and soon was promoted
to being the head chef and creating the menu himself.
One day a diner in the restaurant said to Jamie, "You would be a really good TV star!". He
turned out to be a boss at a local TV station, and soon Jamie had his own cookery programme on
which he would show recipes to viewers at home. But whenever his parents saw him on television,
they remembered the little baby who would mix his food together, and then feel like the proudest
parents in the world.
