Choosing an Appropriate Multimedia Format in Interpreting
a Literary Text!
What is next for Philippine literature? Have you ever wondered what
new book will be printed soon, what new literature will be depicted in the
next blockbuster movie, or what new poems will be published?
There are many new genres coming out in Philippine literature.
Some of them gained ground and following. Some have branched out to
other forms of media, such as theater or movies. Some are just beginning
and are starting to blaze their own path in the local literature scene.
One of these had everyone surprised at how popular it has become.
The comics or komiks, as it is known in the Philippines, is one of the most
daily and has been the go-to entertainment form of some Filipinos. Some
of the most famous ones are Mang Ambo of Larry Alcala, Pugad Baboy by
Pol Medina, and News Hardcore by Manix Abrera. However, there is one
comic book that has gained a lot momentum in mainstream media.
Carlo Vergara’s AngKagilas-Gilas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa
Zaturnahhas won the National Book Award in 2003, despite being self-
published in 2002. It is also unique because even if it follows the life of a
superhero (in the wonder Woman or Darna), it has a gay male character in
the lead, who is named Ada. He manages a beauty parlor and believes in
himself, although his parents have disowned him. After a series of failures
and failed relationship, Ada moves to a small town and receives a rock
from the sky with the word “Zaturnnah” on it. When he ingested it, he
shouts “Zaturnnah!” and becomes a beautiful red—haired woman and a
crime-fighter. He names himself “ZsazsaZaturnnah”.
The character of Zsazsa Zaturnnah has gained a loyal cult following
among comic book readers in the country. It is so successful that it
became a stage play, with Eula Valdez as Zsazsa and TuxqsRutaquio as
Ada. The play was staged many times, with that last one being in
Tanghalang Pilipino where it ran for 91 shows, making it the longest
running stage musical ever staged there.
In 2006, the comic book (which may sometimes be called a graphic
novel) was adapted into a movie, with Rustom Padilla, as Ada and Zsazsa
Padilla as ZsazsaZaturnah. It has won several film awards, including best
supporting actor and best screen song from the GawadTanghalan Awards.
How come Zsazsa Zaturnnah gained so much popularity over the
years and is still gaining popularity up until now? What makes comics so
endearing to its readers that even now, newspapers have a popular
comics section? What does this say about the future of Philippine
literature?
Philippine literature is constantly evolving, which means that there
are more outputs in which you as a student will enjoy in the near future.
One way to embrace these changes is through multimedia presentations.
Multimedia is a combination of text, graphic, sound, animation and
video that is delivered by computer.
• When you allow the user to control what and when these
elements are delivered, it is interactive multimedia.
• When you provide a structure of linked elements through which
the user can navigate, interactive multimedia becomes hypermedia.
Hypermedia is a way of organizing multimedia information by linking
media elements. World wide web is the largest and most used of
hypermedia application.
Components of Multimedia
1. Text
• Letter (Alphabet) and symbols.
• Basic elements to present information.
• In the form of words, sentences and paragraphs are used to
communicate
thoughts, ideas and facts.
• The easiest of all multimedia elements to manipulate.
2. Graphics
• Still images.
• Backbone of any multimedia product.
• Used to visualize important part of communication process.
• Used to add emphasis, direct attention, illustrate concepts, informational
and background for content as well as navigation control for multimedia
products.
3. Audio
• Is a fundamental to multimedia.
• At basic level, sound act as a notice or warning.
• To enhances attraction of multimedia presentation.
• Help to increase concentration toward the presentation.
4. Video
• A moving picture.
• Combines features of graphics and audio to create dynamic content for
multimedia products.
• Would recognize the impact of seeing the actual event rather than
reading or listening to it.
5. Animation
• To create movement on the screen.
• Play huge role in entertainment (providing action and realism) and in
education (providing visualization and demonstration).
• Effective for training applications (provide simulation of the process).
• Movement are made from many still images.
Multimedia in Literature
• All the language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) as well as
viewing skills are developed.
• Literature learning with multimedia provides an approach that is new
and
attractive, compared to conventional textbooks in which verbal meaning
predominates.
• It suggests interactive activities and provides opportunities to study
authors, texts, and contexts using a variety of media and a variety of
technological and information resources.
PERFORMANCE TASK
Directions: Create a group (the same group with zines). Choose a
literary text (short story, novel excerpt, poem, or drama) and
interpret it through a multimedia presentation. This task will require
you to combine you analytical skills with creativity by integrating
various multimedia tools—such as images, video, sound, and text—
to provide a deeper analysis and interpretation of the chosen text.
Examples:
Power Point Presentation
Tiktok Video
Short Film
Animation
Recording
