In the asynchronous activity, there are 3 youtube videos that are meant to be watched to properly
understand two concepts or approaches for developing countries which focuses on improving the
community and the state. Two approaches were discussed, mainly community-based approach and people-
centered approach, but the two has ideas has almost the same approach and that is prioritizing active
participation and ownership by the community that ensures sustainability in the community or state because
through community approach, it empowers individuals and foster a sense of ownership among the
community. Many civil society organizations are made in pursuit of sustainability and advocating these
types of approaches. In Pacific Island Nations, the organization in the Island are careful in implementing
the projects such that they focus understanding and respecting the diverse culture that occupies the Island.
Many organizations such as the ones helping in Pacific Island Nations, are continuing and open to receive
feedback and learning to provide better service to the community.
The methodology of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) aims to foster mutual
understanding and communal problem-solving by fostering collaboration between researchers and
communities. Because community people are active participants in CBPR rather than passive subjects, more
significant and long-lasting solutions are produced. Communities that are empowered by CBPR have a shift
in power that makes their opinions heard and respected. By utilizing community resources and expertise,
this strategy increases the relevance and efficacy of treatments. Communities may take charge of the
research process thanks to CBPR, which produces long-term solutions that are suited to local need.
ARISE (Accountability, Responsiveness, and Inclusive Sustainability for Empowerment)
emphasizes how crucial it is to form solid alliances with communities in order to promote their development
and growth. The secret to CBPR's success is its capacity to foster a cooperative environment for
empowerment and mutual learning, which in turn promotes constructive change. Through promoting
cooperation and utilizing indigenous expertise, and integrating community feedback and knowledge into
the project cycle, CBPR plays a role in long-term and significant community development.
To summarize, sustainable community development requires a people-centered strategy,
meaningful community participation, cultural respect, ongoing project adjustment, and respect to CBPR
principles. Together, these components guarantee that initiatives are efficient, current, and able to promote
long-term, constructive change in both the community and civil society organizations. Sustainable
development objectives can be met in a way that is inclusive and considerate of regional settings by
empowering people and building solid partnerships.
To answer briefly what causes poverty and vulnerability in a community, According UNFPA
(2014), Poverty is influenced by the growth in population and its dynamics including its growth, age
structure and rural-urban distribution. This influence further degrades the living conditions and standards
of the poor, and its developmental prospects. Furthermore, vulnerable communities also faces limited
adaptive capacity because of the economical issues causing limited adaptation to susceptible risk like
climate change (UN, 2018).
Development psychology explores three kinds of changes throughout life, behavioral, emotional
and cognitive. Additionally, different perspective are also studied, modernization theory focuses on
economic growth, dependency theory focuses on critiques global inequalities and dependency on developed
nations and human development approach focuses on the well-being, education and health (Sakalasooriya,
2020). Undeveloped communities are very different to some developed states, some lacks economic
development, health and living standards. This absence is caused by historical legacies, resource
distribution and systematic challenges (Cherry, 2023).
Social Justice is a state wherein fair treatment and equitable status (equality) is distributed among
all individuals without limitations. It involves addressing oppression, inclusion, self-determination and
equal opportunities (Britannica, 2024). Science, technology and innovations plays a crucial role in
achieving social justice and development, some examples can be implementation of STI frameworks that
are aligned with the objectives of sustainable development goals (SDGs). Additionally, using technology
promotes empowerment of marginalized communities by increasing access to resources and challenge
power structures (Understanding Technology, n.d.).
