INTRODUCTION:
The medical laboratory plays a central role in health care. By one
estimate, 70% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory
diagnosis. The purpose of the laboratory is to provide physicians
and other health professionals with information to confirm or reject
diagnosis, establish prognosis, guide patient management and
monitor efficiency of therapy. Besides, the medical laboratory has a
central role in medical research, health surveys, designing and
implementing disease control programs.
Moreover, it plays a leading role in improvement of quality of health
services by application of new technologies and quality assurance
programs. To achieve its goal, the medical laboratory must be
operated by scientifically qualified and technically competent
laboratory technologists.
Medical Laboratory Sciences consist of five specialty departments:
1. Haematology and Immunohematology.
2. Clinical Chemistry.
3. Parasitology and Medical Entomology.
4. Medical Microbiology.
5. Histopathology and Cytology.
This is a full-time program that enables professionals who hold a
bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science to prepare for
advanced clinical, technical, and administrative career
opportunities. Through courses, and research projects, students
enhance their proficiency in a chosen medical laboratory science
discipline: clinical chemistry, hematology, histopathology,
parasitology or microbiology. Certification of a master degree in
medical laboratory sciences in different disciplines is available upon
completion of specific requirements.
The program has three course sequence areas in which students
take advanced theoretical courses: general course sequence,
specialty course sequence and research course sequence. A thesis
as a partial fulfillment to the course is required. The program is
designed to take a full-time student two years to complete.
Depending upon their individual experience, graduates of the
program should bring another level of intellectual stimulation to
their present position, assume new professional roles, or elect to
use their master degree work in preparation for doctoral study.
Accreditation: The Master degree program is accredited by the
Ministry of Higher Education.

2. JUSTIFICATION:
The rapid development and evolution of laboratory sciences
makes it increasingly difficult to capture the knowledge that defines
the current state of practice for clinical laboratory specialist. Now,
more than ever, clinical laboratory technologists need to be
concerned with disease correlations, laboratory results assessment,
problem solving and quality assurance. They need to know not only
how the test is performed but also what, when and why?
The rapid and quick development in the field of laboratory sciences
and investigation technologies need to be met by a parallel
attention to training of qualified technologists at the postgraduate
level for the following reasons:
2.1 To fill the gap for well trained and highly qualified laboratory
specialists.
2.2 To meet the need for highly qualified staff to work in research
institutes and universities.
2.3 To ensure good quality in medical laboratories by providing the
candidates with the required skills and concepts of quality
assurance.
2.4 To provide the candidates with proper research skills and
capabilities.
2.5 To train candidates to be highly qualified laboratory managers.
3. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
3.1 GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
The Master program is intended to create generations of highly
qualified specialists in the different fields of medical laboratory
sciences through strengthening the knowledge and updating
theoretical background, total quality assurance concepts,
professional ethics, social accountability and practical and
communication skills of the candidates in the main fields of medical
laboratory sciences.
3.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES (Graduate Characteristics):
By the end of the Master Program the candidate
should:
3.2.1 Be ready to register for PhD degree at any University inside or
outside the country.
3.2.2 apply of advanced medical laboratory techniques in diagnosis
of diseases
3.2.3Apply quality assurance protocols in the laboratory.
3.2.4 Work in reference laboratories.
3.2.5 Communicate with the health team to identify and apply tests
and techniques used in the differential diagnosis of various
diseases.
Be successful laboratory manager.
3.2.6Implementing scientific based medical evidence research in the
field of specialization.
3.2.7 Has a high commitment to social responsibility
3.2.8 Has a high commitment to applying medical ethics,
professional charters, and respecting human rights
4. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
To be accepted into the Master program, the applicant must meet
the admission requirements according to the academic regulations
of the college of PostgraduateStudies Kassala, University.
5. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES:
Registration of candidates for the Master program is according to
the academic regulations of the college of PostgraduateStudies,
Kassala University for the year 2022. The applicant should be a
graduate of Medical Laboratory Sciences from University of Kassala
or other Universities.
6. DURATION OF STUDY:
TheMaster program consists of two semesters, (15) weeks each, in
addition to supplementary research conducted by the student
during the time period below four months.
7. PROGRAM STRUCTURE:
The semesters consist of 12 courses having a total academic load of
38 credit hours. The first semester consists of 6 courses having an
academic load of 16 credit hours. The second semester is consisting
of 6 courses having an academic load of 16 credit hours. Lastly the
partial fulfillment of complementary researchan academic load of 6
credit hoursas shown in the attached Plate of Academic
Courses Structure.
7.1 General:
The general course sequence consist of 14 credit hours. It includes a
multi-term divisional seminar and courses in immunology, general
pathology, molecular biology etc …. Also courses extend to quality
improvement management, technical assessment, and educational
methodology. Students may gain lecture, discussion, and laboratory
teaching experience by instructing in undergraduate
MedicalTechnology courses.
7.2 Specialty:
The specialty course sequence consists of at least 9 credit hours
and includes courses in the specialty discipline of the student's
choice. Specialties include clinical chemistry, hematology,
histopathology, parasitology and microbiology. Specialty course
sequences are designed to provide in-depth scientific knowledge in
the discipline of choice.
7.3 Research:
The research course sequence consists of a minimum of 6 credit
hours and includes courses in research methodology, quantitative
methods, scientific inquiry, and statistics. Thesis and project credits
are recorded as part of the research core.

9. LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION:
Language of instruction of the program is English.
10. ACADEMIC EVALUATION:
Candidates enrolled in the program are evaluated according to
the Academic Regulations of Graduate Studies for the year 2022.
10.1 Formative assessment:
It is to evaluate the student’s level and guide him to acquire
skillswithout giving him grades.
10.2 Final summative assessment:
- The final evaluation of all courses is conducted at the end of each
semester and covers the evaluation
The course itself covers all theoretical and practical aspects and
contains the following forms:
Theoretical exam
Practical exam.
Oral exam.
10.4 Methods of Student'sAssessment
Formative assessment (as feedback) and attendance (0%),
studentmust attend at least (75%) of the course weight to set
for exam.
Summative assessment (100%) distributed as the following:
- Theory examination: 50%

- Practical examination: 50%

10.6 Outcome of Assessment:
Examination components of the course shall be blueprinted
and standardized for the difficulty index and thereafter the
pass mark is set and tailored as 50%.

11. DEGREES AWARDED:
The Senate of Kassala University awards the of Master
degree in Medical Laboratory Science in one of the five
branches (Hematology and Immunohematology, Medical
Microbiology, Parasitology and Medical Entomology, Clinical
Chemistry and Histopathology and Cytopathology).
