Thermodynamics Control Volume Analysis

The assignment covers fundamental principles of thermodynamics, including conservation of mass and energy, flow versus non-flow energy equations, and mass and energy balance equations for both steady and transient flow conditions. It includes practical problems involving air flow in a jet engine diffuser, a pipe, and an adiabatic steam turbine, requiring calculations of mass flow rates, temperatures, and work done. The submission date for the assignment is set for May 15, 2017.

Assignment on thermo dynamics I

Energy and mass Analysis of control volume

1. Write the statements of conservation of mass and energy principles.
2. What is the difference between flow and non-flow energy equation?
3. Give example of transient flow and drive general mass and energy balance equation
4. Drive general equation of mass and energy balance for a steady flow condition and transient
condition
5. List some steady-flow engineering devices and drive their mass and energy balance equation
6. Air at 10°C and 80 kPa enters the diffuser of a jet engine steadily with a velocity of 200 m/s.
The inlet area of the diffuser is 0.4 m2. The air leaves the diffuser with a velocity that is very
small compared with the inlet velocity. Determine (a) the mass flow rate of the air and (b) the
temperature of the air leaving the diffuser.
7. Air enters a 28-cm diameter pipe steadily at 200 kPa and 20°C with a velocity of 5 m/s. Air
is heated as it flows, and leaves the pipe at 180 kPa and
40°C. Determine
a. the volume flow rate of air at the inlet,
b. the mass flow rate of air,
c. the velocity and volume flow rate at the exit.

8. The power output of an adiabatic steam turbine is 5 MW, and the inlet and the exit conditions
of the steam are as indicated in

(a) Compare the magnitudes of h, ke, and pe.

(b) Determine the work done per unit mass of the steam
flowing through the turbine.

(c) Calculate the mass flow rate of the steam.

9. An insulated rigid tank is initially evacuated. A valve is opened, and atmospheric air at 95
kPa and 17°C enters the tank until the pressure in the tank reaches 95 kPa, at which point the
valve is closed. Determine the final temperature of the air in the tank. Assume constant
specific heats.
