Police interview at Camp Caringal about the impact if ethical standards in law enforcement

1. What is your name, Sir?


 I am Joebert T. Batadlan but you can just call me Sir Batadlan.
2. What is your rank, Sir?
 I am now SPO2/Police Senior Master Sergeant.
3. What school did you graduate from? And what year?
 I graduated from Quezon Colleges of Southern Philippines, Tacurong City, year 1992.
4. And what program did you graduate from?
 AB Economics
5. How many years have you been in service, Sir?
 11 years
6. Sir, in your experience, what role does community engagement play in successful crime
management?
 Based on my experiences, community engagement is the root of effective crime
management because it builds trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the
public.
7. For you, sir, what strategies can be employed to build trust between law enforcement and
marginalized communities in order to enhance crime prevention efforts?
 For me, those strategies are community oriented policing or having community events
including police officers, restorative justice programs and open communication/forums.
8. For your, sir, what ethical consideration is involved in implementing crime management?
And why
 For me, the ethical considerations that are involved in implementing crime management
are transparency, accountability, bias free and equity because it will encourage everyone
to be cooperative for a safer environment.
9. Sir, can you share why the ethical role is very important in law enforcement?
 The ethical role is very important in law enforcement because it is maintaining public
trust, respect, upholding the law, accountability and maintaining legitimacy. And it
reflects to law enforcement that we are not just about enforcing laws but about care for a
society where all citizens feel safe, respected, and fairly treated.
10. Can you give one of the ethical standards you had that is very important to you and then
why?
 Integrity is very important to me, because I believe that is the foundation of trust. It
means doing what is right, even when no one is watching, and being honest and
consistent in one’s actions and decisions.
11. Sir, what are the most pressing challenges law enforcement faces in crime management
today?And for you, how can it be addressed by utilizing ethical practices?
 For me, the most pressing challenges law enforcement faces in crime management today
is the recidivism and overcrowded prison. To address it, we should focus on rehabilitation
and restorative justice.
12. Can you give one misconception about criminology that you frequently encounter in your
work, Sir?
 It’s all about how rehabilitation doesn’t work.
13. And sir, why did you choose to become a police officer?
 I choose to join the Philippine National Police because I really want to serve and protect
everyone who needs help in a legal way.
14. Throughout your service years, do you have ethical dilemmas? And how did you solve
that?
 Yes I have two but I did what is right. Because of my sworn duty, my duty prevailed over
our relationship.
15. And so, what advice would you give to me or to anyone entering the field of criminology
today, Sir?
 My advice to each and everyone who wants to join this field, you must be assertive and
you must be disciplined and responsible to your duty.
