The human body is made up of different systems that coordinate
with one another in order to perform their functions well. If any
part of these organ malfunctions, the body will become
A. unbalanced. The system involved in sexual reproduction is called
Introduction DAY 1 Reproductive System. There is striking difference between the
male and female reproductive system, although they also share a
number of similarities. For example, the reproductive organs of
the male and female are developed from the same embryological
structure and some hormones are commonly found in both male
and female, in varying quantities and produce different
responses. Reproductive hormones are usually made in the
ovaries (in females) and testes (in males). The pituitary gland
controls the functions of both the testes and the ovaries.
Hormones play an important role in both male and female
reproductive system. These hormones keep the reproductive
system properly functioning.
In females, the main reproductive hormones are estrogen and
progesterone, while the main reproductive hormone in males is
testosterone. Although testosterone is considered a male
hormone, females also produce and need a small amount of this,
too.

A. Fact or Myth: Let’s debunk some common sex hormones

myths and facts. Tell whether the statement is a FACT or a
MYTH.
1. Hormones such as Testosterone, helps the germ cells
divide and change several times and gradually turn into
spermatids or young sperm cells.
2. Testosterone is the male hormone, so it’s only for male.
3. Estrogen is the only hormone I need to worry about
menopause.
4. Without estrogen, females are at risk for weak bones later
in life
5. Progesterone is less important than estrogen which is the
“Queen” hormone.

B. MATCHING TYPE: Match column A with column B

B. Important Role of Male Sex Hormones

Developmen DAY 1 The male reproductive system also has prostate glands.
t Chemicals from these glands nourish the sperm cells and help
them mature.
The production of sperm cells and the release of semen can be
regulated by hormones or special chemicals that come from the
testis, the brain and the pituitary gland. (refer to figure 1)

The hormones that are the principal regulators of the male

reproductive system are: gonadotropin releasing hormone
(GnRH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates
spermatogenesis; luteinizing hormone (LH) stimulates the
production of testosterone; and testosterone stimulates the
development of male secondary sex characteristics and
spermatogenesis.

The female reproductive system, just like the male reproductive

system is also regulated by hormones. The follicles produce
hormones that control the growth and release of eggs from the
ovaries. While other hormones prepare the uterus so a baby can
grow in it, other hormones still control the stretching of the uterus
during pregnancy. (Refer to Figure 2)
In females, FSH and LH cause estrogen to be produced. They
regulate the female reproductive system which is divided into the
ovarian cycle and the menstrual cycle. Menopause occurs when
the ovaries lose their sensitivity to FSH and LH and the female
reproductive cycles slow to a stop.
